Lori’s Leukemia Journey

Donation protected
Hello family and friends of Lori & Stu,

Many of you know Lori is hardworking, generous, and kind hearted. She is active and has a passion for mountain biking and adventures with her sidekick Stu. After months of not feeling well, Lori was admitted to the hospital in Kelowna and after multiple tests was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). She was then transferred to Vancouver General Hospital on February 27th.

What does that mean: Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow — the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are made. The word "acute" in acute lymphocytic leukemia comes from the fact that the disease progresses rapidly and creates immature blood cells, rather than mature ones. The word "lymphocytic" in acute lymphocytic leukemia refers to the white blood cells called lymphocytes, which ALL affects. Acute lymphocytic leukemia is also known as acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

What is the treatment: March 4th Lori started chemotherapy, which is projected to take about 4-8 weeks with on going treatment as well as a bone marrow/stem cell transplant. In addition to this, Lori needs a pacemaker to help stabilize her heart.

This has been an ongoing issue for her and while the surgery is minor, her weakened immune system is a factor. They have not been able to move forward with this procedure because of that. Dr’s have set the timeline for Lori to project spending the rest of 2020 in Vancouver.

Where do you fit in:  For now Stu has taken 6 months off of work to be in Vancouver with Lori. He is using his work leave, vacation time and then going on E.I. for 15-weeks as a caregiver.

He is currently renting an Airbnb, which is close to the hospital. The cost for this is $3000 per month. As Lori will be in Vancouver for the remainder of 2020, in and out of the hospital, this comes out to $30,000 JUST in living expenses. We are understandably concerned not only about Lori’s state of health and well-being, but also the financial burden this situation brings with it. If you are thinking, “What can I do to help?” any amount you can contribute to ease their financial burden would be greatly appreciated. Your donation will go directly towards supporting them during this difficult time.

This is not a race but a marathon and we are grateful to have each one of you supporting in all the ways you can.

On behalf of Lori and Stu, thank you for your love and continued support.
