Lorna's Studio of Dance on the brink

Donation protected
We are reaching out to everyone we can be it members, staff, students, family members and any of those who support the ambitious efforts of the performing arts. Due to the current situation throughout our city, country and world, Lorna’s Studio of Dance is a school on the threat of closings its doors.

For those who know or even do not know, Lorna’s Studio of Dance, located in the Waldo area of Kansas City, Missouri, has been a staple of Kansas City for over 66 years. It was formerly owned and under the name of our beloved late “Betty Tilitson”, who upon her retirement graciously gave the ownership over to her lifelong student Lorna Sherer. Betty has since passed but we diligently continue to remember and honor her legacy.

With much diversity, Lorna’s Studio offers classes of many forms of Dance for all persons no matter the Gender, Race, Physical Ability and Age. Students range from the age of 3yrs to 80yrs or more of age… no challenge is too great (even Betty was still teaching classes well into her 90’s).

Lorna Sherer, now the proprietor of the studio works continuously to assure all those who have the art of dance in their heart has a place to learn, experience and grow into their passion. The Studio has been known to offer partial/full scholarships (the waving of fees) for those a passion/desire to dance but may not have the financial resources to pursue their dreams and/or goals.

The studio has been the recipient of countless awards. In 2019 winning Top Studio Honors, Top Choreography and many more through regional competitions. We really feel we could hold those titles in 2020 but due to the COVID Pandemic almost all the Competitions did not take place. Competition, however, is not the primary goal for this studio as much as just fulfilling a desire, drive, enjoyment and camaraderie. However small or large we are a family and support each other and those just starting with respect, dignity and love.

The mandatory shut down, the reduced number of students with trying to reopen safely and then more closings due to contact tracing scares. The Studio funds have been wiped out and nothing coming in again being closed throughout the holiday/winter season. Hoping to safely reopen in January now looks bleak and closing the doors is an evitable possibility.

Any contribution small or large will be greatly appreciated. Our goal is to raise at least $9,000 looking to get us back open and carry us through January, February and March of 2021 with rent, utilities, teachers pay and essentials. Hoping by then the promise of  a vaccine will encourage people to again continue or maybe even start their exciting routine of Dance.
