Love for Logan Patrick Schultz

On August 19, 2024, our beautiful grandson Logan Patrick Schultz was born. His birth was 3 weeks early, but it was important to bring him out into the world at that time.
On ultrasound, his doctors found that Logan had a premature closure of the ductus arteriosus (one of these little pipelines in a baby’s heart that allows for blood to circulate around the heart normally). In normal babies, they close after birth. In Logan’s case, it closed before he was born, disrupting his circulation and causing damage to the right side of his heart. This condition occurs very rarely and in this case spontaneously.
Logan was born at 8:03am and rushed to the high-tech neonatal intensive care (NICU) unit. See the photo of all the IV pumps and monitors!
Unfortunately, things didn't go very well at first, so Logan needed to be placed on ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), a very serious and scary thing. ECMO helps do the work of the heart and lungs, but it’s not without a lot of risk. Due to ECMO, Logan has had blood clots in his liver, legs, and clots and bleeding in his brain. He also contracted an infection in his blood which further complicated his clotting and severely impacted his recovery. Due to the infection and his circulation issues, his poor little hands and feet began to lose blood supply. This caused the dark necrotic tissue you can see in one of the pictures. While these are beginning to heal and look more promising, he may yet lose some of his fingertips.
Logan is not your usual NICU baby. He weighed 7lb 4oz at birth. But he’s going to be in the hospital for a while. Doctors are still not sure how long that may be.
I’m setting up this GoFundMe to help Logan’s dad & mom with the huge expenses they are going to incur. These expenses not only include medical bills, but also lost wages as they try to spend as much time with Logan as possible, and little things that add up such as parking and meals at the hospital. Any amount you can contribute is greatly appreciated as well as your prayers and good wishes for Logan, his mom & dad, and his big sister Quinn are very welcome.
