Low Vision Awareness Month

February is Low Vision Awareness Month!

This February, as we celebrate Low Vision Awareness Month, let's dive into what low vision truly means. Low vision is a spectrum of visual impairments that cannot be fully corrected with standard measures such as glasses . It is a spectrum of visual impairments where individuals may have reduced visual acuity, limited field of vision, or other visual challenges. This affects  daily tasks like reading small print and recognizing faces. Those with low vision often require alternative strategies and adaptive devices to navigate the world.

Now, let's shine a spotlight on Aniridia Syndrome , a rare genetic condition close to our hearts. Aniridia Syndrome is characterized by the partial or complete absence of the iris, the eye's colored part. Aniridia syndrome is found in in 1 in 50,000 to 100,000 newborns worldwide. Aniridia Syndrome is typically associated with other ocular issues such as farsightedness, glaucoma, cornea scarring, and  cataracts. This condition brings challenges like sensitivity to light and visual impairments. Each person's journey with Aniridia is unique and many may require visual aids, adaptive techniques, or surgical interventions to enhance their vision. Allyson, one of our Massage Therapists, was born with this condition.

Individuals with low vision rely highly on their other senses to navigate through life. Some of the other senses may be heightened due to the lack of vision. As we introduce exclusive sensory-focused massages this month, let's not only celebrate heightened senses but also channel our energy towards a meaningful cause.

A portion of our profits goes to the Aniridia Foundation International, supporting those and families facing the extraordinary journey of Aniridia. The mission of the Aniridia Foundation International is to unite the Aniridia Syndrome community, including physicians and researchers. Working together they can advancing knowledge and sight saving treatments through research, education, and ultimately a cure . Anridia Foubdation International provides crucial support to those with Aniridia Syndrome & their families. Through their  projects, presentations and fundraisers, Anridia Foundation International promotes awareness to the public to dispel misconceptions about people with disabilities.
