Lowell Americana Project

The Lowell Americana Project is dedicated to the celebration and preservation of our unique American culture.
Lowell, Arizona was once a thriving part of Bisbee’s mining district..a small town boasting a vibrant main street (Erie) filled with a five and dime, auto dealerships, gas stations, a movie theater, barber shop, bakery, a pharmacy and more. Though much of Lowell has been lost over the years, its Main Street has remained nearly intact. A slice of Americana that appears to be frozen in time, reflecting this colorful period in our country’s history.
Who We Are:
Local enthusiasts have organized to form the Lowell Americana Project in an effort to preserve for future generations this important part of our unique culture. Dependent entirely on volunteer labor and donations from the public this postcard perfect small town Main Street is slowly rising from the dust. Vintage cars and trucks, signage, gas pumps, paint and manpower have all been lent to the effort but we need your help to maintain and continue to preserve this quickly vanishing roadside America.
Why We Need Your Help:
We intend to preserve the historic Shell gas station. The facade was restored five years ago but is now in need of another facelift. Much of the trim needs to be repaired and/or replaced. We hope to continue the theming of the station, including the interior. Your contribution will provide the funds necessary to buy the supplies, the majority of the labor will be volunteer. All materials will be purchased or donated from local vendors.
Why We Care:
The Lowell Americana Project’s efforts to rehang vintage signs, create period storefronts and line the street with classic American cars has made Lowell one of the most photographed streets in the West. Photographers, car enthusiasts and lovers of Americana have traveled from across the country and beyond to capture and experience the revival of Erie street.
The project has garnered national and international attention.
Lowell has appeared in magazines such as Arizona Highways, Sunset ,and National Geographic and has been featured on US, Danish and Canadian television. Erie street has served as a backdrop for Hollywood movies and music videos.
The scope of the project is quite large and at times daunting. Creating store fronts, replacing broken and boarded up windows .. filling those window displays with period correct pieces and returning classic neon signs to the buildings is a big task. We are certain that with your continued support.. together we can do it. Freeport-McMoRan Inc. has generously allowed the Lowell Americana Project to theme the facades of their buildings for historical preservation and community endowment.
Your Donation will continue to make it possible.
