Columbia Central Track Team
Donation protected
The Columbia (Tenn.) Central High School track team operates at a disadvantage when it competes While we have good runners, we can't compete in the field events. That's because the necessary field event facilities are either non-existent or have deteriorated beyond safe use.
We have no high jump landing pit. Our long jump pit is a mess. The runway also is in poor condition. Our discus ring needs a protective discus cage before we can legally practice. The concrete in the shotput and discus rings has deteriorated and the rings might need replacement. We also have a shortage of hurdles.
We don't have a track on our campus. So, our team practices at Columbia State Community State College. It has a nice public 400-meter running track. CSCC does not maintain the field event facilities because they don't have a track team. I have no complaints about this.
We have an anonymous donor who will match every donation dollar for dollar. If we raise $10,000, the donor will give us $10,000. This will allow us to do all of the facility upgrades and leave us some money for operating funds.
Here's the breakdown of what we want to do:
$2,000 - Discus cage
$8,000 - High jump landing pit
$1,000 - removate shotput and discus rings
$1,000 - Long jump pit renovation and runway cover
$2,000 - New hurdles
$6,000 - Operating funds for this year and a reserve for future years.
We receive no funding from the school district except for the coaches' salary supplements. We must raise all of our operating expenses, including entry fees, equipment, gas for the bus, payment for the bus drivers, uniforms and other items.
So, I have embarked on this drive to try to let us be fully competitive in Track and Field.
