Solar Lanterns for Tanzania
This winter, I am traveling to Arusha, Tanzania to volunteer at a local school, teaching principle of organic farming through the WWOOF program. Yes, I am a conservationist at heart. As such, I wanted to make this experience more meaningful in some way and decided to raise money to purchase Luci Lanterns, from MPOWERD . Each lantern costs about $15 and can last a lifetime.
More than 3 billion people world-wide lack or have only intermittent access to electricity; that is nearly half of the entire human population. Over 95% of those without access live in Sub-Saharran Africa and developing Asia, most residing in rural areas (MPowered).
Compact and durable, Luci lanterns are portable, waterproof, and inflatable. A day's charge provides over 6 hours of clean energy.
Inadequate lighting hinders economic growth, educational progress and safety. Furthermore, without modern electricty, people are forced to turn to unsustainable fuels (biomass, kerosene, coal, etc.). As a portable light source, the Luci solar lantern improves safety by enabling one to carry light into dark spaces, reducing rates of violence, accidents, fire hazzards, and theft.
I intend to donate these lanterns to rural boarding schools and health clinics while I am traveling. Without proper lighting clinics have higher mortality rates; adequate lighting has been found to reduce mortality rates by 70% during child birth. Over half of children in developing countries attend school without electricity.
I eagerly await my time in Tanzania. I greatly appreciate your donations and thank you for believing in me and my dreams.
