Long Island Immigrant Solidarity COVID-19 Fund

This is a fund created to deliver food and supplies to asylum seeking and undocumented immigrant communities in Long Island who are directly impacted by COVID-19.

YOUR SUPPORT IN ACTION: Photojournalist John B. Moore visited with families we delivered groceries to and also accompanied volunteers as they made rounds of deliveries to Immigrant households impacted by COVID-19. What are these funds supporting? 

Donations are used to deliver groceries and other necessities to families unable to leave their homes because of COVID-19. The coronavirus pandemic has been especially difficult for undocumented communities, who lack unemployment protections, health insurance and fear deportation.  As such, all of our beneficiaries come to us via word-of-mouth referrals.

All of the money received will be allocated to direct aid for those with COVID-19 who have been referred to this fund. One of our volunteers completes a short intake conversation with an individual or family referred to the fund in order to 1) determine needed supplies, medicines, and groceries in their preferred language and 2) determine what other services they may be able to access. We correspond with and issue payment (reimbursement when applicable) to volunteers who handle delivery to the recipient.

What inspired this fundraiser? 

On March 22nd, Luis, a 32-year-old asylum seeker from Honduras, tested positive for COVID-19. In response, his landlady kicked him out of his apartment. He had no where to go but his car. 

“The temperature dipped down to 36 degrees. There was no food in the car, just water in the trunk. He fought the urge to go to a nearby 7-Eleven. He didn’t want to infect anyone.”

When Luis reached out for support, the community response to his story was swift and strong: raising around $2500 in a matter of days. After securing housing, Luis requested that support spread to his community members in similar situations.

The first family Luis referred was a group of nine, all sick, without food and so low on supplies they didn’t even have soap or cooking oil. That family then requested support for two others, and on it goes. Per Luis' intention, we will continue to fundraise and coordinate aid as Long Island immigrant families refer us to other affected folks in their community. 

Who are our volunteers? 

We are a tight knit network of friends and advocates of Luis coordinating from across the country working in collaboration with local organizations including (but not limited to) Invisible Hands , Nassau County Democratic Socialists of America , and Empowering Young Professionals of Long Island  to deliver food and supplies.

Our commitment:

We will inform our donors via updates about the amount of money we have spent, the nature of the aid, and the number of individuals/households who have received support from this fund.

Though there are a number of organizations and mutual aid networks supporting refugee and immigrant populations at this time, there is such great need in hotspots such as Long Island with undocumented community members experiencing increased precarity.  We hope this fund can offer some security for people as they care for themselves and others amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

If we raise more than Luis’ community needs, we will donate the remaining to established organizations doing this work.

¿Para qué sirven estos fondos?

Las donaciones sirven para entregar alimentos y otros productos de necesidad a familias que no pueden salir de sus casas por la COVID-19. La pandemia del coronavirus ha sido especialmente difícil para comunidades de gente sin documentos, que no tienen subsidios por desempleo, seguro medico y temen ser deportados. Por eso, todos nuestros beneficiarios llegan a nosotros por referencias de boca a boca.

Todo el dinero recibido se asigna como ayuda directa a aquellos con COVID-19 que hayan sido referidos a este fondo. Uno de nuestros voluntarios mantiene una breve conversación con la persona o familia referida para 1) determinar los suministros, medicinas y alimentos necesarios en el idioma que sea necesario y 2) determinar a qué otros servicios puede hacer falta que accedan. Nosotros lo ajustamos y emitimos un pago (reembolso cuando sea necesario) a los voluntarios que se encargan de la entrega al destinatario. 

¿Qué inspiró esta recaudación de fondos? 

El 22 de mazo Luis, un solicitante de asilo de Honduras de 32 años, dio positivo en COVID-19. Acto seguido, su casera le echó de su piso. No tenía ningún otro sitio al que ir que a su coche.

Cuando Luis buscó ayuda, la respuesta de la comunidad fue rápida y fuerte: se consiguió reunir 2.500 dólares en pocos días. Después de que se le asegurara un alojamiento, Luis pidió que se extendiera el apoyo a miembros de su comunidad en situaciones similares. 

La primera familia a la que él nos refirió fue un grupo de nueve, todos enfermos, sin comida y con tan pocos suministros que ni siquiera tenían jabón o aceite para cocinar. Después, esa familia solicitó apoyo para otras dos, y así sigue la cadena. Como propuso Luis, seguiremos recaudando fondos y coordinando ayuda mientras las familias de inmigrantes de Long Island nos refieren a otras personas afectadas dentro de sus comunidades.

¿Quiénes son los voluntarios?

Somos un pequeño grupo de amigos y defensores de Luis coordinados a lo largo del país que trabajamos en colaboración con organizaciones locales, incluidas (pero no solo) Invisible Hands , Nassau County Democratic Socialists of America  y Empowering Young Professionals of Long Island  para la entrega de alimentos y suministros.

Nuestro compromiso:

Si recaudamos más dinero que el que la comunidad de Luis necesita, donaremos la parte sobrante a organizaciones ya establecidas que hacen este trabajo.
