Legendary Brazilian Track and Field coach Luiz de Oliveira is recovering from a serious illness and needs our help to pay for his medical expenses.
O lendário técnico do atletismo brasileiro Luiz de Oliveira está se recuperando de uma doença grave e precisa de nossa ajuda para pagar suas despesas médicas.
Luiz’ innovative training techniques have made an indelible mark on the sport of track and field. Luiz treated his athletes like family and helped us reached goals we never could have imagined would be possible. While coached by Luiz, Joaquim won a gold medal in the 800 meters at the 1984 Olympics, silver at the 1988 Olympics and a bronze in the 1983 world championships. Jose medaled in four world championships: gold in 1987 indoors, silver in 1989 and 1991, and bronze in 1987. We both qualified for and represented Brazil in the 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. We owe our athletic careers to Luis de Oliveira.
Prior to his kidney surgery in November, 2020, Luiz had been working as a coach for the Qatar national track and field program. His contract ended on January 6 because he was no longer able to work. On February 12, he went to the hospital with a pain in his chest. Doctors found calcium in his arteries and he underwent surgery to put in stents.
Luiz’ health deteriorated after the stent surgery. He had to have fluid removed from his lungs and liver and his blood pressure dropped dangerously low. Doctors found fluid in his heart and he underwent another surgery. 1.5 liters of fluid was removed from around his heart.
As he recovers, Luiz needs money to pay $150 a day for his room at the hospital. At this point he has been hospitalized for around 50 days. He also needs $2,5000 for the stents. The Qatari health system covers the cost of the doctors, medications and surgeries, but not the room, stents or incidental costs that arise for the family for having Luiz hospitalized.
Luiz is unemployed and unable to cover these costs. As our coach, mentor and friend, we are asking for help in raising $10,000 to help him cover his medical expenses and be able to recover in peace and comfort. Luiz has given so much to all of us; we hope you can take a moment and help us give back to him.
