Luna’s IVDD healing journey
Donation protected
As many of you know, our beloved dachshund Luna was diagnosed with stage 3 IVDD & has unfortunately lost function in her hind legs.
On June 19th, we noticed that Luna wasn’t being herself, & was walking with a limp. We took her to the vet & thought this “kink” in her back that could be treated conservatively at home. Within 24hrs her condition rapidly deteriorated over night & lost function of her hind legs. On June 20th, we had to rush her to Chesapeake Surgery Center in Annapolis. She was triaged & had an MRI done that revealed a compressed vertebrae in T12 & T13 that was pressing on her spinal cord.
She was diagnosed with a condition commonly known in dachshunds as IVDD & we had to make the tough decision to either go thru with surgery, or euthanasia. Luna is young and has a lot of life left in her, so we made the difficult decision to proceed with surgery & on June 21st she underwent a Hemilaminectomy to repair the herniated disc.
The procedure was successful, & according to her surgeon Dr. Chiu, Luna has a 90% chance of regaining full function in her back legs. She is doing well but not out of the woods yet & faces a 6-8 week post-op recovery period. This go fund me will help us pay for her upcoming follow up appointments with our regular vet, Dr. Cohen at You’ll Never Walk Alone here in the city & her two follow up visits with Dr. Chiu in Annapolis. Once her incision heals she can start red light & hydrotherapy for PT. These funds will also help to cover post op supplies(puppy pads, orthopedic bed pads, crate). She also needs a specialty harness, life vest & redlight therapy vest. In the event she needs a wheelchair, we will use this fund to have her fitted for one etc.
Luna’s accident was so unexpected & has been a nightmare. We thankfully had emergency saving set aside to cover the surgery, but Ryan is still in medical school, & so we’re a little worried about follow up care costs.
We were hesitant to start this GoFundMe at first, but our family and friends encouraged us to accept the help that’s being offered. We appreciate the support from our loved ones & have felt every kind word, phone call, FB comment, & text. If you can’t financially support Luna during this time, sharing this link is helpful as well! Thank you for your support, prayers, & generosity.
