This fundraiser is to help the Ligonier Valley Engineering Group from Ligonier Valley Middle School and High School raise the funds they need to attend the Technology Student Association's Tests of Engineering Aptitude in Mathematics and Science (TEAMS) National Competition in Atlanta, GA.
The students involved in this project are in the eighth through tenth grades, and have been working on honing their mathematical and problem-solving skills throughout the year. These students have expressed an interest in engineering, and excel in a variety of subjects including mathematics, writing, and science. Earlier in the year, some of these students participated in the Future City Competition held in Pittsburgh, placing fifth out of over thirty teams from the tri-state area. Throughout the school year, these students have been working alongside engineers from The Markosky Engineering Group, Inc. who have acted as mentors throughout these competitions.
This competition will provide the students with the opportunity to further test their skills at the national level. Not only will this be a great experience for the students in terms of showing off their abilities, but it will provide them with a unique opportunity to meet students with similar interests from across the entire country. The national competition includes a digital media component, a prepared presentation, a problem-solving session, and a design challenge. The students will also be attending leadership seminars and social events during their downtime, further enhancing the learning experience of this trip.
Many of the students participating this year are returning to the national competition for the second or third year in a row, hoping to once again place in the top ten – last year one of the teams placed first in the nation for their essay, and second in the nation overall! This year will be our first year fielding three teams at the national level, and we are optimistic that we will continue to be successful as we have been over the past two years.
Our budget for this trip is as follows:
Registration: $100 per student/coach x (16 students/coaches) = $1600
Transportation: Airfare (PIT-ATL) $243 per student/coach x (16 students/coaches) = $3895
Ground transportation in Atlanta = $200
Lodging: $225/night x 3 nights x 5 rooms = $3375
Food Allowance: $40/day/student x 3 days x 16 students/coaches = $1920
Total: $10990
With your help, we will be able to send these students to compete at this rigorous academic competition against teams from across the nation, and bring more recognition to their successes and to the Ligonier Valley!
