Lymphoedema LVA Surgery
Donation protected
Surgery Date - 3rd September 2019
Hi, my name is Rachael and I am 19 years old and, since childhood, I have dreamed of performing on the West End. I'm currently training in London to be a musical theatre performer and have had primary Lymphoedema for over 3 years. In my case, I have a scarred lymph node in my right groin which means that the lymphatics in my right leg are under immense strain. Over the past 3 years my leg has increased in size and is now 30% bigger than the other.
Lymphoedema is a long-term chronic condition which involves the swelling of limbs through excess fluid in the body's tissues. This is due to a defect or impairment in the lymphatic system (a stream of hair-like vessels which are used to carry lymph fluid).
The money which I am campaigning for is to fund LVA (Lymphaticovenular Anastomosis) surgery which is a non-NHS operation involving the linking of lymphatics and veins. This creates a new pathway for the lymph fluid to drain which reduces the swelling of the limb.
Being a performer, there is a lot of pressure on appearance and having Lymphoedema hasn't been ideal. I've tried so hard to persevere with other treatments but this is my best option. Surgery will improve my quality of life and also my mental and physical health.
