Working to Support Victims of Violence
The Anti-Violence Partnership of Philadelphia (AVP) addresses the cycle of violence in the Philadelphia area utilizing a wide variety of intervention, prevention and support services. AVP is committed to providing advocacy and support for crime victims and homicide co-victims, violence prevention training of children and adults, mental health services to victims and co-victims, and effecting change in public and private institutions and society at large on behalf of victims and co-victims.
Incorporated in 1982, the Anti-Violence Partnership of Philadelphia has been recognized locally and nationally for innovative and effective activities to reduce violence. AVP was the 1994 recipient of the Philadelphia County Medical Society Benjamin Rush Award for outstanding contribution to health and welfare. AVP’s violence prevention program was a 1996 recipient of the U.S. Department of Justice Certificate of Recognition for exceptional commitment to juvenile justice and has also been recognized by several publications and resource listings on youth-violence prevention, including citations by the Urban Institute, the Harvard School of Public Health and Handgun Control, Inc. The Anti-Violence Partnership of Philadelphia was awarded the Impact Award from GlaxoSmithKline which recognizes organizations for their excellence in community healthcare.
Since 1991, AVP has provided a variety of prevention and intervention services at Philadelphia public, parochial and charter schools, reaching over 100,000 students in more than 60 schools. In the 2012-2013 school year, AVP launched the Violence Intervention/Prevention (VIP) Program, combining prevention education with trauma therapy in schools and communities.
