I think it’s pretty safe to say that this has been an unusual year. A lot has happened while at the same time, nothing has really happened.
Normally at this time of the year, high streets would be busy with people doing their Christmas shopping, pubs and bars would be decorated with fairy lights, tinsel and fake snow, and shop workers would be struggling to smile as they listen to Stay Another Day for the thousandth time.
The start of December is also traditionally the start of the Whamageddon season and fortunately, that’s one thing that covid can’t cancel.
The rules of Whamageddon are simple:
- Whamaggedon starts on the 1st of December and ends at midnight on the 24th of December
- The player must go as long as possible without hearing Wham!'s Christmas song, "Last Christmas"
- Only the original version of "Last Christmas" applies, the player can listen to remixes and covers of the song
- The player is out as soon as they recognise the original version of the song
Last year, we raised over £5,000 for an incredible organisation called Social Bite just by playing Whamageddon. Set up in 2012, Social Bite runs a string of sandwich shops across Scotland employing people who have been homeless and provide free meals for people experiencing homelessness and food poverty. During the pandemic, they’ve provided over half a million free meals to people in need.
Let’s see if we can raise more money for them this year.
Throughout December, just set aside £1 for each day you manage to get through without hearing Last Christmas by Wham. When you hear the song and are eliminated, donate that money to support Social Bite and the crucial work they do.
Please share this page with your friends and family and encourage them to take part too. It’s been a difficult year for everyone. Let’s try to make Christmas a bit better for those in need. Just set aside one pound a day and give it to someone special.
Good luck and merry Christmas.
