Our dear son Luke Lisheski turned 15 in October. He is a Sophomore at Ventura High School, a straight-A student looking forward to getting his driver's permit soon. A couple of weeks ago he felt a large bump behind his ear that seemed to grow out of nowhere. We had a couple of doctors look at it and within a week our local ENT performed surgery to remove it. The idea that it was perhaps a cyst or maybe a lipoma seemed very likely. However, the pathology report soon came back with a different result. Our hearts sank when we found out that Luke has a very rare type of cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma. There are about 300 cases in North America per year and affect mostly children, under the age of 21.
We have known his condition for 4 days now (this gofundme post was posted 02/24/2021) and have gone through a whole range of emotions. We've gone to bed bawling our eyes out, putting together concoctions in the morning determined to start fighting this cancer. Our hearts are filled with hope and peace knowing we are going to do the best we can. My husband Marc has been incredible and has not skipped a beat. He's connected with all of the people we need on our team; expedited scans and labs down to CHLA and has set up a meeting with the pediatric doctor who specializes in this type of cancer. We had that first meeting yesterday and we came away with as good a feeling as we could have.
The overwhelming support and love from friends and family have brought us tears of joy. We feel so supported, loved, and strengthened by your messages, calls, gifts, and concerns. We can't thank you all enough! For the time being, we are just awaiting further tests. Luke has three more scans to reveal exactly what we are up against and tailor a treatment for the best possible outcome.
Like most parents, we have felt so broken-hearted anytime we see a kid fighting for their life, be it cancer or any battle. It isn’t natural, it’s isn’t fair and it doesn’t seem right. Your donations and support will help us through this trial and hopefully even improve his outcome. We humbly offer you many thanks in advance!
