Hello Everyone!
Carmelita Maldonado here, and I truly hope you are having good day.
As some of you know, I am a writer, director, & actor from Boyle Heights. Last year, right before the pandemic hit in 2020, I had the pleasure of writing and directing “La Wija.” La Wija is a short 10-minute horror play about a Latino family who learns the rules about the occult a little too late. It was showcased in Teatro Frida Kahlos 10-minute play festival to great reviews.
As artists, we know how important and cathartic art can be. It is healing, and a life saver at times. Last year, during the Teatro Frida Kahlo festival, my dear uncle was battling cancer, a battle he would unfortunately not win. My uncle passed away the closing weekend of the run, and two weeks later we were in quarantine due to Covid-19. Three weeks later, I lost my job. But, it would all be over soon, Right? Wrong. More people dear to me would pass away along with countless of others.
But life has to go on, and goals were still being set. Because it would be over soon, and I had a little money put aside to film La Wija as a short film. My cast and crew were on board. And, well, here we are a year later! I don’t have that little pile set aside anymore. I am still unemployed, but more determined than ever to make this happen. We need to work. We need to stay creative.
I have a wonderful cast & crew who are all dedicating their time and talents to make this project happen. Please help us create this short film, which will give a handful of talented, dedicated artists an opportunity to be seen, and an opportunity to showcase all of our talents for the world to see. This will help open doors for everyone involved. This is a part of our resume, our calling card. We are not being given these opportunities by studios and the entertainment industry at large. We have to create this content ourselves. Please help us by donating to our Go Fund me for creating “La Wija” as a short film. Any amount is appreciated. If you're unable to donate, believe us, we understand. You can still help us by sending us your good vibrations and sharing this Go Fund Me Campaign with your friends and family. All monies will be used to creating “La Wija” and the opportunity to pay the cast and crew.
Thank you so much!
Sincerely,
The Cast & Crew of “La Wija”

Note: "After seeing La Wija debut a year and change ago as a short play at the Frida Khalo festival, I knew this was something special. When Carmelita asked me to come on board as the DP, I was absolutely ecstatic! Working with Carmelita in the past, I know this project is going to be a blast to co-create and make happen with the help of the phenomenal talent attached to this project. I couldn't be more excited to be a part of this fantastic short La Wija."

Note: "Working on this project is important to me because I want to be able to help out my fellow artist colleagues realize their goals and dreams. We are a group of storytellers, and we must all support one another in telling our stories so the world can see that we too, have interesting narratives to share. Our stories matter and we cannot make that happen unless we have each other's backs and support one another."
