Mabel’s Knee Surgery Fund!

Donation protected
Hello!

Yesterday, we learned our 3 Legged Pup Mabel needs surgery on her (one) knee due to Medial Patellar Luxation and partial tear of the CCL. We would be so grateful for some community support for those that may have the means to donate.

Surgery is scheduled for Monday March 11th with a 12 week recovery period with pretty intense restrictions. We are very overwhelmed and really nervous!!!

All donations will go directly to the cost of Mabel’s surgery and related aftercare.

Anticipated Costs:
  • Surgery & Hospitalization Estimate: $8,097.94 - $8,574.34
  • Bloodwork: Unknown
  • Surgical Consult: $295
  • Medications: Unknown
  • Specialty Amputee Harness: $135
  • Follow up Appointments x2: Unknown
  • Rehab Dr. Appt: $125+/visit
  • Hydrotherapy: $85/visit
  • Addition Costs are anticipated for her comfort during recovery.

Why we need help:
it goes without saying, the cost of this surgery would be incredibly difficult for most folks.

Mabel’s initial signs of difficulty started in June 2023. She has been doing hydrotherapy in an attempt to rehab her knee and avoid surgery. Unfortunately, Rehab was not enough and the Pet Insurance we have determined it was a “preexisting condition” and would not cover the cost of her visits related to the knee.

In December of 2022 I had an injury, subsequent complications, and recent surgery that led to loss of portion of work/income and lots of medical bills since the initial injury. As I slowly chip away at my own medical bills, I know I need help for Mabel.

About Mabel:
We adopted Mabel from Save-a-Bull rescue in November 2022 when she was 6 months old. She LOVES dogs, peanut butter, squeaky toys, playing tug, and buggie rides in her doggie stroller. She is a Smart, Curious, and Silly Busy-Body always on the move and excited to learn new things.

She was found abandoned with her littermates in New Mexico at about 5 weeks old. She was the clear runt and missing half of her back left leg. No one knows for sure happened to her - maybe an animal got her, maybe her umbilical cord was wrapped around, maybe mama pup trying to help. The rescue in New Mexico named her “Stumpy” and reached out to Save-a-Bull because of their Heal-a-Bull program. Mabel, her littermates, and her best friend Otter got to come to the Twin Cities. Mabel stayed with a lovely foster family with Otter in the Heal-a-Bull program. She functioned pretty well with her half leg, but kept trying to walk on it, breaking her skin open. The decision was made to amputate what was remaining of that leg and get it out of her way so she could move around a bit better. After recovering her amputation she was ready for adoption and came to live with us!

About the Surgeries:
both procedures will take place at the same time.

1. Medial Patellar Luxation
Surgical repair generally involves three steps: The point of attachment of the patellar ligament to the shin bone is moved to its proper location. The groove in the femur is deepened so the patella can stay in place. The capsule around the joint is tightened.

2. TPLO, or tibial-plateau-leveling osteotomy, is a surgery performed on dogs to stabilize the stifle joint after ruptures of the cranial cruciate ligament. In the vast majority of dogs, the cranial cruciate ligament ruptures as a result of long-term degeneration, whereby the fibres within the ligament weaken over time
