Mabry Family Faces Eviction Due To Prop Mgr. Fraud

My name is Kevin Mabry II. I'm 19 and will be a senior in the fall at the Florida Institute of Technology. I received my Associate's degree while in high school via a dual-enrollment program. Afterward, Florida Tech awarded me a $72,000 scholarship to transfer to and attend there. I wanted to tell a bit about myself before telling what one property manager has done to my family, as well as dozens of other families, in various apartment complexes owned by Cambridge Management.
It started back before Covid in Dec 2019. My Mom, Dad, and I were looking for a place to live. We went to a complex here in Melbourne, Fl. called Sabal Palms. They were leasing townhouses. We all got applications and completed them and brought them back to the property manager named Angela Smith and a money order for $150 in fees. She called us on December 3rd and told us we were approved and the townhouse would be ready on the 20th. We took Ms. Smith a deposit of $964 and gave it to her to hold our new home. On the 20th, we rented a U-Haul and moved everything in. That day we gave the manager a money order of $980 for the first month's rent and part of December. What follows is where my family's story of misfortune begins.
On Christmas Eve, we got a knock on the door. Two regional managers informed us that their property manager had stolen all our money and left the townhouse showing vacant. They demanded to see our receipts which we showed them. She also put in four other families and took all their money as well. Additionally, she stole the rent money from several other tenants in the complex. When we looked up her charges and found that she has a multitude of animal cruelty, petty theft, shoplifting, and various other misdemeanors, it became clear to my family and me that the screening process for their complexes' property managers is not thorough in the slightest.
The managers assured us all they would do the right thing and give us a lease, but instead, in Feb 2020, they served us and many others with an eviction notice at the start of the pandemic. Some got evicted, some paid another $2100 to stay here, but we decided to fight it. We felt we shouldn't have to pay up for their mistakes. My 2020 graduation year was horrid enough, what with restrictions from Covid. To have to worry about having a home over my head for reasons that aren't my family's fault on top of that is, frankly, disgusting. My Dad has Ulcerative Colitis, which is a debilitating and excruciatingly painful disease. The stress and uncertainties from his illness and the eviction have left him more ill, depressed, and anxious. We are still going to court and have been for a year and a half counting. However, Cambridge Management has done nothing to take responsibility for the theft and displacement of families during a national crisis. Now the judge has ruled in their favor and has given us only a 10-day continuance to find some form of legal aid.
We will be homeless if they win and evict us. I am asking people to imagine how hard it has been on us during this pandemic to worry about having a place to live and feel safe. We don't have the money for a lawyer to properly fight the eviction, nor the money to move somewhere else if we do get evicted. We have made this our home, and we don't want to lose it due to someone else's misdeeds. I understand that everyone is going through hard times, but my family and I humbly ask you to provide any help deemed possible. Because of the legal battle and the issues with moving my uncle Corey has been handling the funds to give them one less thing to worry about. Thank you for taking consideration of us.
