Rebecca’s races

Marie Syrett passed away on the 20th January 2024.

My grandad Brian is currently terminally ill with cancer.

The original purpose of this page was to raise money for Macmillan cancer charity through completion of Europes Toughest Mudder in June 2023. However, throughout my mums terminal cancer diagnosis running is something that has really helped my mental health and is something I have continued so I am keeping the giving page open for future races. The original post reads below.

A quote reads, 'you can be a cancer victim or a survivor of cancer. It is a mindset'. Before my mum was diagnosed as terminally ill with reoccuring bowel cancer in September 2022, I believe I would have rolled my eyes at anyone who said this to me. It has been a month, and every day I have found this diagnosis to creep into every aspect of my daily life and eat me alive. Until the 6th October, when my mum said to me: "We need to change how we're thinking. We can't be sad like this forever. We need to wake up each day and be grateful that we're still together." My mum is right. Following my nan's bereavement in July, who also experienced cancer, I have felt rather lost. I have always wanted to do Tough Mudder. I like running, but running doesn't like me (lol) - so this challenge is not only in place to fundraise for an amazing cause, but also to give me something to keep working towards, so I can feel a sense of renewed purpose. That's why I am running the Midlands Tough Mudder June 2023 10K in honour of Macmillan cancer charity. In the past, I have raised over £1000 for Cancer Research through various Race for Life events. I am sure everyone can appreciate how close this cause is to my heart. I completely appreciate the difficult times we find ourselves in, so even a word of support means the world. Any money donated goes straight to the charity and not myself. Thanks in advance - Rebecca

** May 2023 update ** Still blown away from the support received by everyone - thanks so much! On the 14th May I ran the Cancer Research UK Cleethorpes 5k, I have also been to as many parkruns as I possibly can.. still feeling rather nervous for next month but excited for the challenge!  In terms of my mum, her last surveillance scans identified that the cancer is still growing and spreading but otherwise she’s still putting on a brave face each day and I’m super proud of her. My mental health and anxiety levels have seen better days but running is definitely helping me keep going! - Rebecca
