Document & Discover: Butterflies in Madagascar

Donation protected
Butterflies are colorful, charismatic ambassadors of their habitats. Understanding and documenting patterns of diversity is more important than ever in a changing world. Together, in the rainforests of Eastern Madagascar, we will establish a community powered butterfly monitoring program to support environmental and biological education programs while collecting valuable data in a truly unique part of the world.

My colleagues, Courtney Meek and Dr. Ben Muller are moving to Madagascar to work with multiple conservation and non-governmental organizations in Eastern Madagascar. Together we will design and implement a butterfly monitoring scheme that they will oversee for the first 18 months, but will be designed to be self-sustainable for the long-term. We will host workshops to teach students and naturalists about the importance of biodiversity monitoring, the ecological role of butterflies, and on monitoring methods and data collection. All data will be carefully curated and checked to create a comprehensive diversity database.

Budget:
$500 + Delta (& partner) miles == flight to Madagascar
$500 == In-kind expenses (office space, electricity, station resources)
                     space for educational and trap-making workshops
$300 == Posters, educational pamphlets
$600 == Materials for traps, baits, nets
$100 == In-country transportation to field sites

With any additional funds, we will be able to give more workshops, continue to buy supplies as needed, and support increasing local outreach and education projects.

How to donate miles!
I am accepting frequent flier miles to go toward my flight to/from Madagascar. Delta (and partners, including Air France) have competitive fairs, and are some of the few airlines that fly to Madagascar.

About Me:
www.ekhazan.wixsite.com/ekhazan

I am a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Natural Resources at the University of Florida. My Ph.D. is focused on butterfly community ecology and physiology. Studying these beautiful and important insects is important as our global landscapes change, and my goal is to both document the diversity we still have, and better understand the needs of wildlife to best conserve and protect biodiversity.

I have a Master's degree in Biology for which I worked in the jungles of Costa Rica and Mexico. Since then, I spent time managing a small field station, and all of their long-term projects, in Northeastern Costa Rica. When I started my Ph.D. I began working in Colombia where I carry out community-scale monitoring and physiology experiments.
