Madison Murtland Recovery Fund

On July 6th, 2020, Madison Murtland, a 2019 graduate of Greensburg Salem was in a life-threatening ATV crash. Madison was a standout runner for the Golden Lions, earning a WPIAL Gold Medal in the 4x800 Meter relay, before beginning her collegiate career at Shippensburg University. To say that she will have a long road to recovery would be an understatement, but with the help of our community, and because we know how driven she is and the fighter that she is, we know that she will be back to running, hunting, and fishing again as soon as possible. We know that this unfortunate event will not hold her back from doing the things that she loves to do or achieving her life's goals, but we also know that she has a long road to recovery ahead of her.

After Madison's accident, she was taken to Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville by ambulance. Immediately, doctors were able to tell that she had suffered major internal bleeding as well as other major injuries. After emergency surgery, her doctors realized just how strong she is to have survived such horrible injuries and loss of blood.

Madison suffered a collapsed lung, damage to her colon and also damage to her small and large intestines. She has a broken rib and vertebrae, and has suffered a severe hernia. Since the accident, she has undergone three surgeries, one of which included inserting a stent into her pancreas as well as cutting away parts of her bowel which were extremely damaged. The bowel then had to be stapled back together in order to reattach her colon. The damage to her small intestine has proven to be difficult to access, as it's right below her stomach and pancreas. Through this process, Madison has had to receive more than six liters of blood.

The doctors have had to keep drainage tubes in Madison's pancreas in order for it to be able to heal properly, and also to make sure that no fluid leaks into her body. If this would happen, there's a possibility that the staples used to repair her bowel would deteriorate. In addition, Madison has had a tube inserted into her chest to drain fluid from her lung.

As can be seen, Madison has been through a lot. Thankfully, she is an extremely strong young woman. However, we need your help, both monetarily - to help with the costs of her hospital stay and recovery - and also through your prayers. As strong as Madison is, she needs her community's help on both counts.

We truly appreciate your continued thoughts and prayers concerning Madison's recovery!
