Who We Are
Maghery Band were established in 1945 as a marching fife and drum band. We are a voluntary community group that through our performances promote the Irish language, heritage, arts and culture. We have recently established ourselves as an Academy as we voluntarily and professionally train youth from 6+years.
The Dream
In 1997 Maghery Band won their first All Ireland Title and were honoured to be invited to partake in New York's St.Patrick's Day Parade.
Money was fundraised in both Maghery, Co.Donegal, Ireland and New York, USA so that the band could be subsidised in order to attend.
Unfortunately the monies raised were not enough to undertake the trip and so it was decided that the money that was fundraised thus far was to be invested into the building of Ionad an Mhachaire (Maghery Community Centre) which now serves as a hub to all community groups in Maghery. This was a much needed resource in their home village and a place that they now call home and practise in.
The Team
The band practise anywhere between 4 to 16 hours a week and members consist of school, college students and some working adults.
The band have become a marching band phenomenon in Ireland having won 3 consecutive International Band Championship Titles in 2014, 2015 & 2016. They have just won their 4th consecutive All Ireland Title in August 2018 and are locally to Dungloe 2 times Easter champions. The band have also held numerous Donegal and Ulster Fleadh Titles.
What makes the band so successful is their originality and innovative drill, drumming and music routines.
Performing
The band perform nationwide at competitions and festivals such as The Mary From Dungloe International Festival, The Rose of Tralee International Festival, Burtonport Community Festival, Limerick's International Band Championship and Dungloe's Easter Sunday Competition. They have recently broken into the Northern Ireland Entertainment competing Scene which seen them scouted by Tattoo Show Directors. The band will be headlining in Liverpool Tattoo in the Echo arena in September 2019.
Rewarding
Following their 3rd All Ireland win in 2017 and invitations from fellow competitors in the USA the band's committee decided to honour their 20year outstanding invitation to attend NYC St. Patrick's Day parade and travel for the first time internationally.
The committee developed a plan to embark on not just a New York visit but undertake an East Coast USA Tour so as to fulfill performance duties in one cost effective trip rather than several individual ones.
Maghery Band East Coast USA Tour
In March 2019 the Senior Competitive Maghery Band will travel to perform in New York City's St. Patrick's Day parade on Saturday 16th March, Bayonne New Jersey's St. Patrick's Day Parade on Sunday 17th March and then fly inner state to perform in Universal Studios and Disney World in Orlando, Florida on Tuesday 19th & Thursday 21st March.
The tour will further our reach in entertaining and promoting our local village of Maghery, Hometown of Dungloe (based along the Wild Atlantic Way), their County of Donegal and Ireland as a whole.
We hope that you can assist us in fundraising for to undertake the tour at financial ease and subsidise the youth who give so much of their time to their community and country on a professional level.
Do you know the benefits of an education in the arts?
Learning music can increase academic development, helping students to improve literacy, mathematics and cognitive development. It also helps young people develop cultural literacy and personal skills – from collaboration through to perseverance - which are critical to the modern workplace. Your contribution to today's band students ensures a stronger economy for the future!
What your donation assists?
Financial security so that our voluntary based, non-profit organisation can continue to be active in competing and entertaining to further our promotion of Maghery, Dungloe, Donegal and Ireland.
Support for our band community is an investment in youth and assists our promotion of the Irish language and culture.
The majority of our members are college students and younger. Families of as many 5 members are involved in the performance of the band and so the cost of travelling exceeds the price of just one individual. As a result members will be subsidised - Your donation will mean that all members will be in a position to attend and take part in the performance tour.
You are investing in a 70+ year old tradition of heritage, community and culture.
Your investment will ensure that our traditions are supported as we develop further into our eighth decade of existence.
You will assist in the promotion of the Irish language, beyond our county and country.
Active communities create further demand for products and services and our tour will reach a market that will generate further interest in arts and culture worldwide.
Banding with us will root your links to local community and economy.
Ultimately you will make a once in a lifetime dream a reality... For members who have given endless hours to the community with no financial or personal gain you will assist them in attending performances that will create memories for life... as they represent Ireland on the world stage!
This is not a holiday...
Our professional performing tour will over the duration of 2 weeks include 4 parades and numerous performances.
The perks of travelling to perform in a new country will give us the opportunity as a group to see some of the wonderful sights that await us but our mission and goal will be to absorb the experience through performing as we represent our hometown and country.
We will have less than 4days of free time available over the 2 week duration that will give us as individuals time to rest and/or experience more of the locations we are visiting.
In return we will be inviting our American cousins to visit us and perform in Ireland generating business and tourism locally.
Our tour will amount to approx. €101,000 and we hope to subsidise as much of that as possible. Our goal stands at 50%.
Our General fundraising goal with local events & Gofundme will be €25,000 .
Our Corporate & Branded Sponsorship programme goal is €30,000 :
Businesses interested in 'Banding With Us' please see: https://issuu.com/magheryband/docs/maghery_band_academy_band_with_us

* Fundraised monies will not be funding any extra or personal activities included in the tour.
