Magnetic Island Turtle Hospital

Magnetic Island Network for Turtles (MINT) is a community group that takes action for sea turtle conservation through rehabilitation, awareness and education.

MINT is located on Magnetic Island, surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef National Park. It’s run by a small dedicated group of volunteers who play a dual role.
Firstly, saving sea turtles who would otherwise have died had they not received medical attention and care.
Secondly, contributing to environmental and public awareness through community engagement and the release of rehabilitated turtles. As a result, general public awareness has been raised, leading to an increased number of stranded sea turtles being reported, rescued and subsequently released. 

 

 

 

What We Do:

MINT operates in five distinct areas:

1.      Operating the Magnetic Island Turtle Hospital, providing daily care for sick and injured sea turtles

2.      Responding to reports of stranded or injured sea turtles 

3.      Engaging with the community through education and awareness programs  

4.      Communicating and Networking with other Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Centers 

5.      Financing operations through Fundraising and Donations

The Cost of Sea Turtle Rehabilitation

On average it costs $2,500 to nurse a sea turtle until it can be released back into the ocean. With no access to government funding or corporate sponsorship, MINT relies entirely on the support of public donations.  Despite the costs involved, MINT’s Turtle Hospital has saved many turtles from dying. It has also played a role in educating our schoolchildren and increasing public awareness of the importance of conserving sea turtles. 

MINT’s current capacity allows for the rehabilitation of four adult turtles plus two juvenile turtles at any given time. Operating at the maximum capacity requires an annual budget of $36,500 based on current costings. Our fund raising is focused on ensuring that we can meet our day-to-day costs. However, we are also seeking funding to improve and expand our current facility. In this context we are desperate to raise additional funds to purchase an X-ray machine.  This will provide critical information that will greatly increase the chance of saving the life of these endangered animals.
