Maison Rose Shelter Garden Fundraiser

We need your support to build a garden – but not just any garden! We are hoping to construct a green haven for women and children living at the ‘La Maison Rose’ shelter here in Dakar.

La Maison Rose supports women and girls who have been victims of domestic and sexual abuse, exploitation, trafficking or have been living on the streets. It provides the young women, many of whom have children, with accommodation, health and psychological support needed to rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society.

Whilst living at the house, women are given access to essential services including medical care, counselling and legal advice, as well as psychological support through activities such as yoga, art workshops and hopefully soon gardening. The centre also provides career advice and skills training to support themselves once they are ready to leave the shelter.

The shelter has identified an area on their bare rooftop as a great opportunity to build a garden to provide a peaceful sanctuary in a very busy and noisy neighbourhood and house. Moreover, this garden will allow the women and kids to connect with nature, learn to care for plants and acquire important gardening skills.

Our goal is to raise AUD3,000 (~USD2,000) to deliver the below:

1. Planter boxes for herbs, vegetables and other edible plants;

2. Climate appropriate plants and pots;

3. Garden furniture;

4. Gardening lessons for the women.

Once we have raised enough funds, a group of us here in Dakar will build the garden at the shelter.
