Makai Emergency Medical Expenses

Hi everyone!

This is a fundraiser for Deb Schaller and her dog Makai.

Deb took Makai for a walk yesterday and after 10 minutes in cool weather he suffered severe heat stroke and is currently hospitalized and fighting for his life.

He is getting supportive care at the animal hospital currently and is expected to make a good recovery if treatment is continued….with a minimum of $20,000 estimated to be spent. He will be hospitalized for several more days with specialty care.

I'll try to be brief...

What they are finding is that his lungs are full of fluid and his best chance is being put in a mechanical ventilator to breathe for him and give his lungs a chance to heal. 24 hours with constant monitoring and care = $10k

Looking at a 3-5 days stay. First 24 hours after heat stroke are critical. Vast majority of dogs that get thru that time survive. 85% chance Risks include pneumonia so they put him on antibiotics. They are doing more tests today for organ function, he currently has fluid around one kidney, don't think it's blood.

Strider was also being considered. They are also doing cpap for him. No clots, no diarrhea, coag is normal, platelets are normal, places a catheter, no heart indications of any kind, xray of chest only showed fluid in lungs. He's currently on 100% oxygen which the 24 hour limit expires tonight. I believe it's about the same for mechanical ventilation 24-48 hours.
