Makayla Davis’ Recovery Fund
Donation protected
On Friday, March 3rd, Makayla Davis was unexpectedly involved in a horrible accident. At the barn, as she was finishing chores, and found herself pinned up between the sweetest of horses and the bars of the stall. What was first thought to be a broken nose and concussion, was quickly assessed as a much worse situation. Through the grace and mercies of God, Makayla was able to maintain consciousness until neighbors and paramedics arrived.
Makayla was transported to Parker Adventist Hospital where they performed CT scans to assess her injuries. The scans revealed that she had several facial fractures and that the globe of her left eye had been ruptured. Makayla was quickly transported to Saint Anthony’s Hospital via “Flight for Life”. While she was at the Hospital, she and her family met with many surgeons and specialists including a retinal specialist who determined that her left eye was not salvageable and will need to be removed.
On Wednesday, March 8th, Makayla had facial reconstruction surgery at Saint Anthony’s to fix her broken nose, fractured forehead, two fractured eye sockets and two fractured cheekbones. After a nine-day stay in the hospital, Makayla was released to go home. Her wonderful grandmother, Lorna, opened her home to Makayla and her mom, Janessa, who currently resides in Florida. They are all working together and with the aid of other family members and friends to keep Makayla comfortable at home. Due to her injuries, Makayla must sleep in specific positions, shower with special products and eat a mechanical soft diet.
On Wednesday, March 15th, Makayla and her family met with an Ophthalmoplastic surgeon, Dr. T, in Denver to schedule her eye removal for Tuesday, March 21st. She has also been referred to an ocularist, therapist, dentist and optometrist. These things have caused extra financial strain.

Makayla and her family are extremely grateful to everyone that has been there for her and her family during this extremely difficult time.
This GoFundMe has been set up in Makayla’s name to assist her and her family in helping pay for all of her current bills, medical bills, surgeries, therapies and miscellaneous medical items that are and will be needed, along with any other assistance that she needs as she heals. Her estimated recovery time is six to eight months.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your donation, love, prayers, and support for Makayla.

UPDATE AS OF JUNE 22nd 2023!!!!
Update by Makayla Davis June 2023
It has been 3 months and 16 days since my accident. The days have been long and full of physical therapies, psychological therapies, and doctor appointments. Oh, and naps! It has been tough to accept and grasp the concept that my eye is gone forever. I will not see the same again. I still have approximately eight more months of healing as the fractures I sustained in my face fuse the way they need. I did, however, get my first prosthetic eye! WOOHOO! I tried a “regular” looking eye that matched my good eye and I struggled with the look of it on myself. Instead, my wonderful prosthetic doctor created a beautiful custom eye for me. I asked for blue and silver. I asked for it to shine and shimmer in the sunlight, twinkle in the dark and look like a mermaid’s tail. I think she nailed it.

I am grateful for my friends and my family’s emotional support and the time they have spent with me and helped drive me everywhere. It has been frustrating and sad as I adjust to a new lifestyle and re-configure my future. I miss driving but I miss my horses and other animals more. I have 1 dog that is with me all the time, 2 horses, both in FABULOUS care, 1 Guinea Pig with my roommate Bri and 3 bunnies, also in fantastic care with great friends. Although I cannot currently drive, my mom has been a huge help to get me where I need to go. She has done a great job of keeping our spirits lifted. We have good laughs quite often. The accident may have been tragic, but she helps keep it fun and I wouldn’t trade the time we are spending together for anything.

Since my accident, I have had to move out of my home in Elizabeth, CO and into my grandmother’s home, also referred to as Nana, with my mom and my pup, Mattis, in Centennial, CO. Currently, my mom, Mattis and I are in Florida staying with her boyfriend for a few months as my mom needed to get back to work. My doctors felt the humidity would be good for my healing. And they were right! We flew into Florida on June 13th, and I already can feel a huge difference. The humidity has been a great help to the numerous stitches in my scalp. To repair all my facial fractures with minimal scarring, my surgeon went through my scalp from ear to ear and all those stitches are in the dissolving process. (Fun…). Flying out to Florida was a much simpler process than anticipated. Mattis was a champ through the whole thing. He was extraordinarily well-behaved (I know, big shocker lol) and loved getting to see all the people. Of course, he only got pets from our piolet and flight attendants, as he was working.

One glitch that we did encounter happened a few days before departure. Mattis was chasing a squirrel in Nana’s yard and ripped a toenail off. We were able to get to the vet quickly to have it cleaned and wrapped. I have been rewrapping his paw while in Florida. I have found a wonderful vet here who Mattis just adores. He will be having a dental done with two possible tooth extractions on June 29th with our lovely new Florida vet while here.

I wish I could say I know what will happen next or when I will go back to work. This experience has really pushed me into some momentous soul-searching. I have always had a drive to serve my community and to help those around me. A healthy community is a happy community in my opinion. So, how do I get more involved? Help more. Support more. Well, I have decided with lots of prayers to finish my psychology degree this fall and next year attend seminary. My dream is to own my own small farm that will have a community garden and livestock (beef, pork, poultry, etc.). I feel a drive to obtain the certificates/degrees necessary to run a small family and trauma therapy center utilizing farming and ranching to help people overcome their mental demons. Animals and gardening have helped me so much over the years, and I have concluded that there must be a way to incorporate all these things into one. In the meantime, I am resting and preparing mentally to return to school part-time in the fall, if I get all clear from my doctors. There is a slight chance that they will want me to wait for the spring semester in 2024 due to the terrible concussion I sustained.
As I am still not working but do have bills and animals to tend to, I am still in need of help in any way possible. Once I am back In Colorado in a few weeks, I will be starting another Meal Train. That was such a huge relief for myself and my family in those first few weeks. A huge THANK YOU to anyone and everyone who brought us food or sent us gift cards. You made a big difference. My GoFundMe is still active for those who can and would be willing to donate. Every cent helps in more words than I can fathom. Another HUGE THANK YOU to all those who have already donated to my fund. I would have lost my car in May if it wasn’t for people like you. I do also have a non-profit helping direct funds on my behalf if you wish to make a tax-deductible donation. Please contact Ron Brenning at [email redacted]. He is one of the wonderful Pastors of Crossroads Community Church in Parker, Colorado. This church has been my backbone for many years. (If you’re local and looking for a new church, I cannot say enough wonderous things about them!!) I truly appreciate all the love and support my community has shown me and I cannot wait to be in a place to pay it forward a million times.
With all my love,
Makayla Davis
