Let’s Make Lucky Lane Real, and Foster the Next Generation of Lucky's Legacy
Thanks to 4,285 supporters and San Diego City Council Member Stephen Whitburn, the honorary renaming of Grim Avenue to Lucky Lane is officially happening! Now we need your help with the final step, funding the physical "Lucky Lane" signage... But we want to go even further by launching something that will carry Lucky’s spirit forward for generations.
This fundraiser has two goals:
- Cover the cost of the official Lucky Lane signs, estimated between $1,000 and $3,000 by the city.
- Use the remaining (and hopefully majority) of the funds to establish the Lucky Wong Memorial Scholarship, supporting underprivileged culinary arts students in San Diego.
Lucky wasn’t just a restaurant owner, he was a mentor, a welcoming presence, and a model of quiet, everyday generosity. The Lucky Wong Memorial Scholarship will reflect those same values. It will provide financial support to young people in San Diego who dream of pursuing a career in food and hospitality but face barriers to accessing education or training.
Depending on how much we raise, the scholarship may be awarded as a one-time opportunity to multiple recipients, or become a perpetual annual award given in Lucky’s name for years to come. Either way, it’s a tribute to his legacy of hard work, kindness, and community-building, qualities that still matter in today’s kitchens, dining rooms, and neighborhoods.
Thank you for helping us bring Lucky Lane to life, and for supporting the next generation of chefs and restaurateurs inspired by his example.
