Make the Mountain Pygmy-Possum Marsupial of the Year!

Incredible mountain pygmy-possums are tiny native marsupials that hibernate under the snow for seven months of the year.

Once thought to be extinct, these extraordinary nocturnal creatures weigh just 40 grams (about the same as a medium chicken’s egg) and are about 250 mm long, with more than half their body made up by their tail.

They have been around for about 10,000 years and live in alpine and sub-alpine habitats across NSW and Victoria.

Tragically, mountain pygmy-possums are heading towards extinction, with only about 2000 left in the wild.

These critically endangered possums face many challenges – a decline in Bogong moths (a critical food source), climate change reducing the winter snowfall they rely on, and habitat loss from ski resort developments.

It’s no exaggeration to say they may soon be gone forever...

Donate to make the mountain pygmy possum Marsupial of the Year!

This beautiful marsupial needs your support to be in with a chance to win this inaugural prize.

Your donation will support ACF’s work to:
  • Protect habitat for Australia’s threatened wildlife, like the mountain pygmy-possum.
  • Demand climate action and give a voice to our precious wildlife.
  • Safeguard our alpine biodiversity, so the mountain pygmy-possum can thrive for generations to come.
