To our community,
743 West King Street, colloquially the Awesome Space, is home to 641rpm Music, Huzzah! Books, Boone Area Community Radio, Black in Boone, Born Again Dirt Composting, and one, very young, very dear entity: The Spacement.
Since September 1st, 2023, The Spacement has housed the following events:
8 Shows
6 Screenings
3 Readings
3 Figure Drawing Sessions
2 Community Markets
1 Dance Party
1 Wine Tasting
1 Board Game Night
A product of what-ifs and wouldn’t-its; a culmination of conversations amongst friends; the expression of countless hours of work; by the grace of ritual and the gratitude of many beings interlocked in time, this space we summon is one, part and parcel, of our community.
With nothing but “the space” itself we set our sights to DIY. Through friends and family we created a space to assemble and assemble we did, on 25 occasions, to a consistently full home; as safely and accessibly as possible.
The Spacement cannot be the community space of our deepest machinations without being unequivocally safe and accessible. For this reason, we write to announce the temporary suspension of programming in the space, until we can meet the standard safety and ADA accessibility requirements to open our doors in our truest and most faithful capacity. To be clear, the programming will continue! But will not be housed in The Spacement. Because we cannot host our events, they will invariably slow down in frequency, but continue nonetheless.
In the meantime we wish to commence our rebirth as quickly as possible. Subsequently we have already begun the process. We are filing for a change of use as well as the proper permits for our intended renovations, which of course will be to code.
The renovations that will permit the continued and indefinite use of the space are as follows:
An ADA accessible bathroom
An ADA accessible egress
All aspects of the fire & safety code being met equally
While this list doesn’t appear a mountain, it will cost more than what we can currently afford. The Spacement runs on volunteer labor. The money we generate pays artists as it does the rent and utilities of the space itself. In this way,
we need to raise the funds to make this endeavor possible.
Here are the Brass Tacks:
The cost in renovations are quoted at $15,000.00, which includes the following:
Building Plans - $1,000
Zoning and permitting - $1,000
Construction and materials- $13,000
Moving forward, we will host fundraising events, to which you are invited, updates TBA.
If you want to help but are yourself without funds, please reach out to us! There are many ways you can help to realize this space without a bill in your hand or a penny in your pocket; just reach out!
