Making Nigeria Plastic Positive

In Nigeria, as in several other developing countries, there is an informal waste management system. Our company’s aim is to address this problem, we will setup a system where collected waste can be exchanged by residents for groceries, mobile phone credit and cash.
The collected waste will be taken to manufacturing companies and processed into post-consumer recycled materials. Pollution is currently a serious problem in Nigeria, with many relying on plastic bottled water in the absence of readily available clean drinking water.
The mismanagement of waste particularly plastic, in Nigeria through dumping or burning not only has a negative environmental impact, it also has a seriously detrimental effect on public health, with one person dying every 30 seconds as a consequence of poor waste management.
TrashCoin is a waste recycling system that uses the circular economy principle to collect Plastic waste, process them into Pellets and flakes and resell these products to industrial manufacturers in Africa and Europe.
Currently in Nigeria, plastic waste is being collected by local thrash collectors who visits homes to pick up trash for a fee. They then sort the plastic waste out and sell to companies that reuse or recycle them. This system has proven to be inefficient as the streets are still being littered with waste, and this can be attributed to sev- eral factors.
Trashcoin’s main goal is to curb unlawful disposal of solid waste that affect the environment while also creating job opportunities for people in the society.
