Malawi Education Initiative

As a former University Administrator and Assistant Professor, I have a personal library of over 2,000 educational books, approximately 110 boxes. I've decided to donate my entire library to the children in the Republic of Malawi.

During my time as a graduate student at the University of Iowa in 1981, Dr. Philip Hubbard one of the Vice Presidents at the University of Iowa ask me to have dinner with Mr. John A. Burrough Jr., and his wife. Mr. Burrough was a UI Alumni and a member of the University of Iowa’s Championship Football Team in the 1950’s. The University was honoring the entire team at that time. Little did I know how this dinner invitation would impact my life. Mr. Burrough Jr. was the US Ambassador to the Republic of Malawi at that time.

That evening, at dinner, I received the history lesson of my life about Africa and the Republic of Malawi. It was a wonderful dinner and conversation with the Ambassador and his Wife that evening.

Years later (2011), I was watching the Lawrence O’Donnell, news program, “The Last Word,” where Mr. O'Donnell addressed the issue about school children in Malawi sitting on the dirt floor in their classrooms without desks. He spoke about his K.I.N.D. (Kids in Need of Desks) program that prompted me to give. And now I'm looking to further our support to Malawi by donating books I've collected over several decades.

As an African American educator, I understand the value of books and how they contribute to life-long learning for young people throughout our global society. I was raised by a single-diverse mother with my six siblings. The local and school library were my most treasured possessions. I discovered the world through books.

Last November, (2022), the Ambassador of Republic of Malawi, Ambassador Justice Esme Chombo, accepted my donation. I am requesting your assistance in this educational initiative by donating funds that will enable me to ship these educational resources to the Republic of Malawi. The Ambassador of the Republic of Malawi indicated they will release a Press Release thanking you personally for your philanthropic support along with a picture of the Malawi children recipients.
