EVERYTHING GOES DARK
LOGLINE
A Black high schooler prepares for her senior picture day when insecurities and a tense friendship transform her into something abnormal.
SYNOPSIS
An all-star student and fun-loving kid, Simone just wants to fit in, but being the only Black girl at a predominately white school makes things a bit tricky. We meet Simone chatting with her best friend, Emma. It’s the morning of their senior year photo day, and Simone wants her portrait to be perfect. This one photo will be her legacy.
School starts with the senior class photo. As the photographer counts down, one of Simone’s classmates makes an offhand remark about her blackness. Before she can respond, a FLASH catches her by surprise. To everyone else, it’s just a bad picture, but to Simone, it’s a ghoulish creature that starts to plague her thoughts.
WHAT IS 'EVERYTHING GOES DARK'?
Everything Goes Dark is a horror short film that explores body dysmorphia and internalized racism in young people of color, specifically Black women. As our protagonist feels pressure to conform to a white standard, she loses all sense of self. The nagging feeling of “ugliness” and “shame” overcome her. She begins to see herself not as a teenage girl but as a ghoulish monster. As the only Black student in her class, this negative image is amplified in her mind. It’s hard for her to seek help because her white peers don’t quite understand how to help her.
