Mankato District 77 School Lunch Debt

Tax deductible
Hello Mankato!

Recently I was listening to an interview on public radio regarding school lunch debt.

It occurred to me that I wonder how our own district is holding up financially in that regard and I made some phone calls.

District 77 has a current school lunch debt of approximately $110,000!

Further research into this issue shows that in the state of Minnesota, 1 in 10 households is “food insecure” - Being food insecure means not having enough money or other resources to buy enough food for all members of the household.

This could credibly support the assumption that there are students in our district, whose only food during the day, are the meals they receive at school.

That being said, District 77 does NOT deny students the access to a hot meal if they cannot afford to pay for it or if their family has a debt, however the debt does accumulate year to year and does have an impact on the overall Nutritional Services budget.

In order to ensure that our districts policy to feed our kids regardless of circumstance remains in place and our lunchrooms have the funding they need to feed our children in coming years, it is my hope that you will join me in donating to the Districts Nutritional Services program to clear this debt.

Our kids deserve it and I know this community cares!

Thank you all!
