Our family friend Steve Mann contracted Sepsis from a dog bite on January 9. It took 10 days to get the diagnosis of Caprocytopugia. Since that time he has lost all of his skin, his nose was amputated, both feet have been amputated at the calf. His sprits have been high and his faith strong. He is an amazing man. He is still facing 6-8 weeks in the hospital, wound care, and rehab. In the last few days he learned the Social Security board decided he DID NOT qualify for disability. How can we treat our fellow Americans in such a manner? This was a bilateral amputation. Steve is not our HERO because of his medical condition but by the courage he has exhibited. No Pity, no why me, no anything negetive. We know he can reapply but why is that necessary? We also know that he can still be turned down again. He has had a full time job since age 18 and has worked for our family business for 20 yrs, and paid into Social Security for nearly 40 years. Really he did not need or deserve anymore bad news. His wife, a retired nurse, will be his primary caregiver.
Now he has had to retain a disabilty lawyer at the cost of $6000, with the hopes of getting some benefit down the road. The immediate needs will be to remodel his existing home to be able to get in and our with a wheelchair, and make the bathroom accessibly to him.
