Mantha was born with a brain malformation called Chiari Malformation. A Chiari Malformation is a structural defect where the lower part of the brain extends into the spinal canal. Although this can be a common condition, it is not common that surgery is required as most individuals who have a Chiari Malformation experience no symptoms. For individuals with more pronounced forms of Chiari Malformation, a variety of difficult symptoms present.

Mantha was diagnosed with a Chiari Malformation Type I at 20 years old after having an MRI following a car crash. The malformation has been monitored since, and over the past year, the malformation has doubled in size. Likewise, the severity of symptoms for Mantha have also increased and has made it difficult for Mantha to function normally.

Mantha will go into Posterior fossa decompression surgery on August 17th, 2023 to relieve the pressure on Mantha’s brain. We are hopeful that the recovery will only take 3 months and normal activities can be resumed. As part of this surgery and recovery period, Mantha is required to take 4 weeks off of work.

To accomplish this recovery, Mantha needs support and will require a support team to take time off work. There are a variety of expenses that are a part of the surgery and the recovery period that will follow.

Mantha and the care team need your support. Any small gift is greatly appreciated. If supporting financially is difficult for you at this time, please consider other acts of kindness such as letters, affirmations, or spreading the word with your family and friends.

Mantha is in the third year of a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, with a concentration in Wilderness Therapy at Naropa University. Mantha, when recovered, will complete the degree by finishing an internship and graduating in May of 2024. Upon graduating, Mantha will begin to serve the community by providing mental health counseling for marginalized youth via wilderness and nature-based practices. Mantha loves to spend time sailing, knitting, playing hacky sack, throwing wacky-themed parties, embroidering, hanging with friends, punch needling, backpacking, hiking, and laughing.

Thank you for joining us in the support of Mantha.
