*Update: Matthew is now home recovering and receiving daily care from Oishei Children’s Hosptial. His recovery will be long and hard! We are praying for him and his family on this difficult journey and we appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers. Your support will help aid in Matthew’s recovery and the family is so grateful!
We have recently been saddened by the news that one of our St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute boys, Matthew Hibbert, is currently receiving treatment at Oishei Children’s Hospital for Guillain-Barre Syndrome. This is a very rare condition, triggered by an acute viral infection, in which the immune system attacks the nerves which affects certain parts of the body. While treatment will put him on the road to recovery, it will be a very long and painful process. Matthew is unable to move his eyes or see well; he cannot hold his head up and he cannot walk.
His mother, Jessica, remains by Matthew’s side and is unable to work during this time. Matthew’s oldest brother, Joseph, is a St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute Graduate of 2021; Samuel, is a St. Joseph’s Collegiate student class of 2024 and his sister Nina is a Mount St. Mary’s student in the class of 2026. They are at his side whenever possible as this struggle affects the entire family.
Matthew is a sweet and caring young man with a heart of gold. He is passionate about sports, plays football for SJCI and is a proud Marauder. All of his teammates and close friends are praying for him to have a full recovery. The road will be long for Matthew and his family. Jessica is a single mom and has worked tirelessly to provide the best opportunities for her children. We are asking for any assistance possible while his family navigates this tremendous hardship. A fundraiser is being planned, though help is needed now and is greatly appreciated.
