March Daily Dip for Acadia Family Center
Tax deductible
In November 2020, an intrepid group of (mostly) women from Mount Desert Island, Maine came together with the purpose of cold-water swimming through the winter season. We call ourselves Cold Tits, Warm Hearts and we have been gathering on (at least) a weekly basis, to dip in the cold North Atlantic Ocean! Our group has grown from a small handful to almost 20 people who regularly join in our cold-water antics each week.
Each person meets this endeavor with their own level of experience, body tolerance, and a keen awareness of personal safety - some people stay in the water for a minute and some of us have built up to 10-15 minutes in the 36-40-degree ocean water. But what's definitely common is the friendships that we are finding, as well as a significant boost in our mental health through the winter.
In early February 2021, our group decided that we wanted to focus some time and attention on using this seemingly wild winter activity to give back to our community. We recognize that we are incredibly privileged to be able to do what we are doing, so it is time to leverage that privilege for good!
Because this experience has had such a positive impact on our mental health, we decided it would be appropriate to raise money for a local mental health organization. We would like to invite you to help us in raising money to benefit the Acadia Family Center in Southwest Harbor.
Each day, for the entire month of March, AT LEAST one member of our group commits to completing a cold water swim - regardless of the weather. This is in recognition of the fact that those who are experiencing mental health challenges must do so - on a daily basis - regardless of whatever else is going on around them. We also plan to utilize our Instagram account to highlight the personal stories of our group members - as a way to decrease the stigma surrounding living with a mental health diagnosis.
More about the Acadia Family Center: Acadia Family Center provides education, prevention, and out-patient treatment services for individuals of all ages, families, and communities affected by alcohol, drug abuse, and/or mental health disorders.
“The heart of the Acadia Family Center is built upon the brave clients who show up to do the hard work of healing through clinical treatment. To support them effectively, we consider it our responsibility to create a strong, caring, and essential perimeter of privacy within which they can safely rise to the challenge of healing, recovery, and building resiliency. Maintaining a treatment facility in the local community where this important and personal work can be done safely, with professional oversight and resources, is even more essential due to the current worldwide health crisis and pivotal struggles for cultural equality.” — Stefanie Joy Muscat, Executive Director
