March for Mayra Challenge!
One of our own immigration warriors and co-founder of Cool Immigration Lawyers, Mayra Calo, was recently diagnosed with stage 3 pancreatic cancer. She urgently needs our help!
Mayra is a solo immigration attorney in Tampa, serving - often on a pro bono or low bono basis - the most vulnerable members of our immigrant community. She has also served as an invaluable resource to other immigration attorneys, always willing to mentor, assist, and support. The organizers of this fundraiser can both credit Mayra with being instrumental in the career growth we have experienced. Mayra is someone who never says "no." Not to her family, not to clients, and not to fellow immigration attorneys. In fact, the first time I ever heard her say it to me was when I initially raised the idea of organizing this fundraiser for her benefit. Mayra is fiercely independent and self-reliant, and it is difficult for her to ask for or accept help. However, in light of the treatment plan ahead of her, she - a single mom to a kind, talented young woman who is a freshman at LSU and - a solo practitioner who has opted to accept a humble lifestyle in the name of offering affordable services to her clients - is going to need a financial safety net. It was not easy for her to do, but last night, tearfully, she agreed to accept our help.
Given the aggressive nature of this cancer and the corresponding treatment plan, she will need to stop working to focus on her health. This fundraiser is aimed at giving her the financial freedom to focus completely on her recovery, while knowing that her mortgage, Dali's college tuition, and other basic expenses are covered. We would like to raise 6 months worth of reserves for her.
The immigration bar is unique in its collaborative spirit, and now is the time for us to come together to give our colleague and friend the best chance of beating this horrendous disease. My consultation fee is $150. I commit to donating the proceeds from one consultation a week for the next four weeks to the March for Mayra. Will you stand with me to do the same?
