Marcia Novak's Brain Injury Recovery
Donation protected
Marcia is a loving wife, mother and grandmother. If you know her, you know that she loves camping, cooking and spoiling her grandkids Barrett and Carter. She always thinks of others and puts their needs before her own. One thing about her is that if you ever came over to her house, she would make sure that you didn’t leave with an empty stomach, even if she had to ask if you were hungry five times.
On November 14, 2019, Marcia suffered a brain aneurysm and stroke to the left side of her brain. She was taken to Forbes Hospital where she was subsequently life flighted to Allegheny General Hospital for brain surgery. Marcia received a craniotomy where the left front flap of her skull was removed and the aneurysm was clipped to prevent further bleeding. Within a week Marcia also received a tracheotomy because she was diagnosed with pneumonia and the risk of infection increased dramatically with a breathing tube. We are told that the area of her brain that was most impacted is her speech and memory. She has lost almost all function to the right side of her body but we have seen small movements from both her right arm and leg which provides promise.
At this time, we do not know the full extent of the damage to Marcia’s brain as she is unable to speak. She has however been breathing on her own for the last two weeks. Occasionally she will nod yes and no to questions as we talk with her. After about three weeks, she is now out of the ICU and currently in Neuro Telemetry. We are currently in the phase of looking for the best place for Marcia to go after she is released from the hospital for rehabilitation.
Marcia is making progress towards recovery and while it will be a very slow process, we know she is going to require extensive physical, occupational, and speech therapy. We are hopeful for the future, but are looking to help George and Marcia offset some of the future medical and rehabilitation costs. She has always been a fighter and with the support of all of her friends and family, we truly believe she will recover from this injury.
Thank you from all of the Novak family for your support. Please help us share Marcia’s story.
