Justice for Marcus-David Peters

Donation protected
“Justice and Reformation” was created in response to the unjustified murder of Marcus-David Peters by a Richmond, VA., police officer on May 14, 2018. Marcus was unarmed, completely undressed and experiencing a mental health crisis. Marcus was a Black man, a son, brother, uncle, graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, high school biology teacher, mentor and beloved community member. Marcus deserved #HelpNotDeath.

After the unjust killing of George Floyd, the Richmond community and our nation took a strong stand in solidarity to say NO MORE and demand this country SHOW that Black Lives Matter and put an end to the systemic racism that too often leads to the unjust murders of Black people.

The Richmond community has been protesting and taking a strong stand to hold our elected officials accountable and demand changes to the very systems that continue to kill Black people and oppress Black lives. The Richmond communities' fearlessness and continuous fight is why we can now partially celebrate the news that the city of Richmond will meet the demands of the creation and  implementation of a Marcus Alert system to provide mental health professionals instead of police officers to people experiencing mental crises; the creation of an independent Civilian Review Board with subpoena power; and the removal of the Confederate statues.

Let's take note, however, not to be too quick to celebrate until there is complete follow-up and all demands are met. So far, all we have are promises. It is important that we demand that the City includes the family of Marcus-David Peters and community organizers at every single step. We must make sure the demands are met as intended.

**** The family of Marcus-David Peters…. STILL has NOT received his personal belongings from the city of Richmond after TWO YEARS!!  We have requested them but were denied!    Officer Micheal Nyantakyi still has not been charge!  The city told the family ( paraphrased) regarding extending a settlement, We will just give you what we give all other families. The coldness and overtone of this statement led us to taking the stance that we will not allow the city to disrespect Marcus or our family, so we declined!****

Please note that we are not asking for any funds, however, many people have asked how they can donate to the family or the fight of Justice and Reformation for Marcus-David Peters.  Any funds that are collected will go toward supporting Marcus’ family as we continue to fight to ensure that the demands for the Marcus Alert and Civilian Review Board are met. There is a lot of work still to be done to ensure we hold our elected and appointed officials accountable for following through with meeting our demands. We want to take steps and actions to ensure that the memory of Marcus-David Peters is not forgotten.

Thank you in advance.
