Hi, my name is Sherry Martens. I am the daughter-in-law of Marcy Thurber. On February 2nd, 2024, Marcy went into ICU at the University of Minnesota. She had a brain aneurysm that ruptured. It caused her to have a Carotid Cavernous Fistula behind her right eye. Her right eye was very swollen, she could not move that eye and she was slowly losing her vision. She was, unfortunately, declared blind in that eye and the eye is paralyzed from the nerve being suffacated. They went in and put 2 stints in her artery. That should have taken care of it. It did not. It was still ruptured. They went back in and put a lot of coil in. That helped, but it was still leaking. After this procedure, she developed a blood clot all the way from her groin to her foot and many blood clots from the knee down. They had to take her in for emergency surgery to save her leg. She had an incision on top of her leg and many little ones below the knee. At this time they also had to make two 9 inch incisions on each side of her leg to help her muscles expand. She was in the recovery room when she started bleeding internally. They had to rush her back again. She then needed an emergency blood transfusion. After she was brought back, we were told the aneurysm was put on the back burner. Her body needed to heal first. It was a very scary time. After 3 days, they told us they could go back in. This time they went in with glue. It helped the leak on the right eye side, but then the left eye started to do the same thing. It was swollen shut, she couldn't move it and she was losing her eyesite. They went back in with more glue. This finally stopped it. She was in the ICU for 24 days and a regular room for 2 days. She had a total of 9 procedures done. 7 where she was completely put under. She was able to finally come home on February 28th. She came home with a wound vac, she needs a walker to walk, she is permanently blind and paralyzed in her right eye. She has a nurse coming out, PT coming out and OT coming out. Her wound-vac came out on Tuesday along with many, many stitches. At this time, they realized she has two infections happening. She was put on a high dose of antibiotics and we are praying they help. She has many appointments outside her home too. Her left eye is getting better. We are praying it gets 100% better. Gary and Marcy both worked at the airport. Marcy may never be able to go back and right now Gary has to be her primary caretaker, so he has not been able to work either. This has definitely put a strain on things. These two people help anybody they can. They are the most selfless people I know. They have definitely put others in front of them financially to help people out. If you could donate anything it would greatly be appreciated so very much. If not, maybe you could share this. If not, please, please pray for Marcy to continue to heal. We want her eyesite to come back fully in that left eye and we want her to walk again without the help of a walker and please pray for Gary. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. Love you all!!
