Margaret Romero - Our Angel lost due to COVID-19
On December 24, 2020 after experiencing weakness and confusion following dialysis our dad, Andrew was admitted to the hospital following his dialysis treatment - he had tested positive via the rapid test for COVID-19. The immediate family also received positive COVID-19 test results. Due to our dad's need for dialysis he was flown to Reno for treatment that evening, no one could accompany him due to COVID-19 restrictions.
December 25, 2020 - Christmas, even though everyone was sluggish we had Christmas with our family at home - biscuits and gravy with fruit and eggs and opened presents, we saved dad's per mom's request. We also prepared a ham and scalloped potatoes, unfortunately for most of us our sense of smell was lost that night and we all took note "Mom, can you taste that?" It was kind of funny to us all. We decided to go for a cruise to look at the Christmas lights with our hot tea all the while trying to get back to watch the end of the Lakers game.
On the morning of December 26, 2020 our mom was admitted to Northern Inyo after we took her up concerned mostly due to her confusion, not lack of oxygen.
The rest of the family stayed in quarantine with minimal symptoms - headache, fatigue, cough, lost of smell, and sinus pressure.
Week of December 28, 2020 - Due to the precautions surrounding COVID-19 our family was unable to see our dad and had set up a zoom call, we were informed at that time to make arrangements and prepare for the worst. It was the worst, and we were all crushed. At the same time we were informed our mother was doing ok and they were treating with antibiotics to fight an infection that was causing confusion, and was being treated for Covid-19. A few days later we were informed our dad was doing much better and they were focusing on getting him into rehab, what a relief. We were also informed during that time our mother was not doing as well and was still confused, she had a fall while in the care of NIH - they had done a scan but did not notice any bleeds, it was a concern due to the fact that she had been placed on blood thinners due to COVID-19. No bleeding was discovered at that time. The family is off quarantine - January 1, 2021
Week of Jan. 4, 2021 - The family had a zoom call with our mom, she seemed agitated but after the family spoke with her she seems more calm but she was not able to communicate with us. Following that call it was discovered that due to her mannerisms that she had had a stroke. The Doctor called the next day and said she had a watershed stroke, one that would be difficult to recover from. The family needed to make arrangements to have her at the hospital or could bring her home and keep her comfortable. We begun making arrangements to bring her home.
January 7, 2021 - We received the call that our beautiful mother had passed on. That night we got to go say our goodbyes and prayers for this beautiful soul. It felt like a weight had lifted that night and she was at peace. We informed family and friends. That was a difficult night for all.
January 10, 2021 - We had a zoom call scheduled with our dad, he was doing so much better and was responding and asking questions about our mom and the process moving forward, you could tell it was difficult for him - it was for all of us. He was still on oxygen but improving. We were able to share a cake with my sister and share her birthday with great news that our dad had made so much progress. It was a good day.
January 18, 2021 - Rehab! Our dad has been transferred from Reno, NV to Bishop, CA. He will be in rehab and hopefully home, sooner than later. The official timeline given is one month. We got to visit with him shortly after he arrived and our cousins even got to see him being unloaded and were the first to greet him back to the valley. This time will be difficult, but our family is strong we all have each others support and love to get though this. Our mother taught us to be that way, she is with us and we all feel the strength she is passing on to us.
Due to the COVID-19 numbers going up, logistics with our family being out of state, and our dad still on the healing process we hope to have services for our beautiful mother in the Spring 2021 so we can all be present and on safer terms.
We have many people asking how they can help, so we are setting up this gofundme for that purpose. We foresee many medical bills and want to give our mom a beautiful sending off when we can all be together for everyone in a safe environment. From our family, we thank you all for the love and support you have given us, from the food to the donations, to the well wishes and medicines. Our mother was always about community and she loved each and every one of you. She taught us to be strong, always have self-love and take care of each other. She loved to dress up and represent our people in the best way possible. She was one of the most beautiful Indigenous woman. If you knew her she would always greet you with a beautiful smiling face, we hope that is how you all remember her. She now shines through all of us and we are blessed to have had this time with her, she made us all better people because of her presence. Thank you for sharing all your memories they will all live on though us. She will be missed. She was such a wonderful mother, sister, cousin, daughter, auntie and her favorite role grandma, we will love you always mom.
On behalf of her children Shannon, Shawna, and Sage.
