Right before the Covid pandemic began in 2020, my grandfather passed away from pancreatic cancer. My grandmother and him were married 53 years and spent every day together. My family decided it would be best to bring my grandmother to the states so she wouldn’t be left to grieve alone, given that most of our family doesn’t live in Colombia anymore. COVID made it impossible for her to travel for about 10 months. She was finally able to come to Florida in October to quarantine with my family indefinitely. Later in the year she began having chest pressure and other indications that her heart wasn’t too healthy. My family decided it would be best for her to leave back to Colombia come January to be able to receive medical attention— she is not insured in the U.S. and would not be able to see anyone here.

We finally booked her flight to Colombia which was supposed to be for this Friday. On Monday evening, she had severe chest pains and noticeable fatigue. Since she had experienced similar symptoms before, my family was hesitant to take her to the ER due to both insurance and the current COVID situation. The situation unfortunately worsened and she was rushed to the ER on Tuesday night, after collapsing briefly at home. The doctors confirmed she had a heart attack on Monday and her heart beat was incredibly slow. She stayed overnight on Tuesday and on Wednesday morning she received surgery to implant a pacemaker.

We are very fortunate that we were able to bring her in on time and that she is recovering well. We have experienced a lot of loss this year and this was very big scare for our entire family. However, now our family is faced with thousands of dollars in medical bills due to her being uninsured.  Any donation would be greatly appreciated.
