Margarita (Lon) Herrera's Heart & Lung Transplant

Donation protected
This is my beautiful soul sister, Margarita 'Lon' Herrera. Always with a smile on her face, and unwavering hope and wonder of what tomorrow might bring. If you know Margarita, you know she has an immense love and passion for life, her family, friends, and people she meets from all walks of life.

For those of you who may not know Margarita, she is a wonderful wife, mother, sister, and friend. She was born in Mexico City to parents - Jorge Herrera and Dolores ‘Lola’ Hernández. At the age of 9 years old she and her younger sister, Maura Luginbuhl, unexpectedly lost their mother. Soon after, Margarita moved to San Francisco, California to live with her father, where she began the next chapter of her life. She became a mother to a wonderful son, Christian Guillory, and met the love of her life, now husband Brian Callaway. Margarita is also very fond of education, and worked tirelessly to achieve her medical career in nursing, and worked at SF General Hospital (now known as Zuckerberg General Hospital and Trauma Center).

Although Margarita faced many hurdles in life, she never stops being a positive ray of sunshine. You can always count on Margarita to give you sage advice on living life to the fullest, and enjoying everything life has to offer this very moment! Margarita is definitely a powerful presence, and strives to uphold her family values because family is everything to her. I am confident her mom is beaming from heaven with love and pride seeing what a strong and courageous woman her daughter has become.

As many of you know, Margarita lives in San Francisco with her husband Brian Callaway, and son Christian Guillory. Her younger sister Maura resides with her family in Mexico. Many years ago, Margarita was diagnosed with Lupus, and over time it has taken a toll on her body. This has affected her ability to work and do the many things she loves. For the past few years, she has been battling Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, which has severely affected her heart and lungs. Both Margarita and Brian have dedicated their lives to helping others, Margarita as a nurse and Brian in law enforcement. They are a loving couple who are selfless in their endeavors. Now it's our turn to help.

Margarita was previously at UCSF Parnassus ICU in San Francisco. Soon after arriving her condition quickly worsened, and the decision to place her on an ECMO machine (life support) was ultimately made to keep her stable. Unfortunately UCSF was not able to list her and perform the double lung transplant. Thankfully, Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, CA agreed to take Margarita's case, and she was transferred recently and is in stable condition. We are waiting for her to be listed for a transplant, which will now be both heart and lungs. Margarita is still hanging in there, and it's a true testament to her strong will and perseverance! She has certainly stunned everyone with her will to live and her fortitude to persevere despite so many different medical setbacks throughout her illness.

As you can imagine, the cost of what our friends have been experiencing, and what they will face, has added a whole different layer of stress, which we don’t want them to feel the burden of. Therefore, we have started this fundraiser to aid in the long term anticipated medical expenses, and journey our friends will have.

So many of you have reached out, sent prayers, heartfelt messages and support for Margarita, Brian and Christian during this time, and they are eternally grateful for these gestures. Close family and friends have also been there for the family, in spite of the many challenges with the pandemic and distance.

Our hope is for Margarita to receive a heart and double lung transplant for a second chance at life that she deserves, and to be on the path to recovery soon, so she can be back with her family at home and continue creating more fond memories.

We will continue to pray and have faith in healing for Margarita. Please feel free to leave words of encouragement and strength here for her and her family to uplift their spirits, and keep them feeling your love. We thank you so much for your generosity and prayers.
