Margaux Dempsey’s Eagle Project

Donation protected

Goal:

Working with The Sustainable Lifestyle and Scouts BSA (formerly known as Boy Scouts of America), we will plant over 100 trees in Nassau, The Bahamas, with the help of 20-30 volunteers. We will plant trees in the New Providence Ecology Park, in an effort to:

- Mitigate soil erosion and promote a better ecosystem;

- Reduce carbon emissions in the atmosphere to slow the increase of global warming;

- Strengthen international ties of Scouts BSA; and

-Complete one of the first international female-lead Eagle Scout Projects

Information on Nassau:

Nassau is the capital island of The Bahamas. It is located 30 minutes by plane from Miami, and 4 hours by plane from Denver. Temperatures in the spring typically range from 63°F-90°F, and it is normally sunny and humid.

Fundraising:

The budget for this project is approximately $20,000, including the trees for the project, tools, as well as meals, lodging, and transportation within Nassau for volunteers during the two days of tree planting. To raise this large sum of money, I will need all of the help I can get, so be sure to contact your friends, family, and other organizations looking to donate to a great cause. All donations are tax-exempt.

Donations through this website will go directly to Troop 2176 for the materials, tools, supplies, ecological services, and professionals required for this project. Another way to donate to my project is by check, which should be directed to Troop 2176, with a memo designating the donation for Margaux Dempsey’s Eagle Project.

Trees:

The trees that we will be planting in Nassau are a mix of Rams Horn Trees, Buttonwood Trees, Mahogany Trees, Gumalemi Trees, and Lignum Vitae Trees. These trees are all native Bahamian trees and will assist in increasing biological diversification in the area. All trees will be provided for at the project site, and are all between 3-7 gallons.

These trees will assist in re-foresting the New Providence Ecology Park, a former landfill that is being renovated to be a new park. As a team, our goal is to plant over 100 trees over a two-day period.

Volunteer:

If you are considering to become a volunteer for this project, here is some information you need to know:

- The project will take place during the March 19-26, 2022.

- We will fly to Nassau from Denver, and spend two days planting trees for the project. Volunteers have the option to stay the rest of the week at a reduced group rate at the Grand Hyatt BahaMar. We can offer guidance in coordinating flights, hotel reservations, and transportation for the project.

- You will need a passport that will not expire within six months after the date of travel.

- Part of the fundraising will be directed toward financial assistance to support volunteer travel.

-A portion of 2 hotel nights at the Grand Hyatt BahaMar and most meals during the 2 project days will be provided for volunteers.

-BahaMar and the Bahamas have evolving COVID protocols on testing and vaccination requirements (more information will be provided closer to the trip, as the mandates are changing very frequently).
