On June 16, 2019, Maria Bernal, a proud single mother of two lost her home after a lightning strike during a thunderstorm caused a fire. The roof of the home collapsed, leaving her possessions in ruin. Maria has spent her life sacrificing to give her sons the best opportunity for success, often setting her needs aside to make family a priority. Now she finds herself without a home and in need of help.
Maria has worked as a line cook for over twenty-five years. She began cooking as a means to build a new life in the United States shortly after migrating here from Mexico. She is the hardest working person I have ever known. She quickly gained experience and a reputation for hard work, cleanliness, and discipline. She has always earned the respect, and often the admiration of her coworkers and superiors alike. She is a person who is willing to do what it takes to get the job done, even if it means creating things "on the fly" .
She has always exceeded the expectations of the workplace in both work ethic and strength of character. She has been a teacher to many, including her sons. Never one to be underestimated, never one to quit or say that a job can't be done.
When I worked my first double, and my first 16 hour shift, I thought of her. She has worked two jobs, with multiple "double" days a week, for decades. She has done this, and clocked in at 5-6AM-only to return home late at night, for years at a time. She has always done this with a positive attitude and with great pride in her work.
With costs of building a new home in the range of $100,000, she finds herself without the means to reconstruct the home she has spent her life trying to build. With the help of her sons, her family, and the community we hope to rebuild her a home deserving of the incredible person that she is.
