Maria Magner & Baby, Road to Recovery

The night before Thanksgiving Maria had a seizure. We rushed to the hospital and later found out that she has a large brain tumor in her left frontal lobe affecting the motor functions on her right side and her speech. She is also 27 weeks pregnant with our second child, a baby girl. Since her seizure, her symptoms have been getting worse and we have been rushing to get her surgery as soon as possible.

In the past week, we have talked with neurosurgeons at a number of institutions. They all agree that her situation is urgent and needs immediate surgery. But, the baby makes that timeline difficult. It means she needs an extremely high level of care.

The surgery is scheduled for 8am on Wednesday, December 8th, at the University of California San Francisco. We are hoping that everything works out for her to have the operation. The surgery will require extremely skilled neurosurgeons and state of the art equipment to ensure that as much tumor is removed without harming her speech and motor functions. There will be a team of doctors on standby if they need to perform an emergency C-section.

After the surgery, recovery will be a long road. If all goes well, we will have the tumor out so she can start her physical therapy and rehabilitation. Then, in February, she will have a C-section and depending on the type of tumor, she may start chemo and radiation shortly after the delivery.
