On September 14th, 2019 my sister welcomed her sweet girl Mariana Guadalupe Castillo into the world at 34 weeks. Before that, Natalia went to the hospital and was admitted due to increased amount of amniotic fluid. Mariana was diagnosed with Tracheoesophageal fistula also known as TE Fistula. Meaning her esophagus was not connected to her stomach which prevented her from swallowing. This increased the fluid inside my sister's belly while carrying baby. The doctors then determined that delivering her early was the best way to keep both mom and baby safe. At 34 weeks (~6 weeks early) little Mariana made her preemie debut weighing in at 4 lbs. 4 oz. and 15” long.
Mariana's heartbeat remained strong throughout the pregnancy, but once she was born.. her heart rate was way too low. 4:09AM when she first came in to this world, her heart stopped. All nurses and doctors were fighting with her to try and obtain the tiniest and strongest beat. After 20 minutes of hearing the nurses and doctors trying to stabilized my niece, they finally decided to take her up to the NICU and try to stabilize her there. Longest 45 minutes of our lives.
After what felt like forever, and long prayers, and preparing myself, my sister and my mom for the worst, the Doctor comes in and says she is stable. The surgery that she was originally needing, will no longer be needed, however there is plenty of more issues coming.
Mariana will be staying in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) until she can breath without respiratory support, feed by mouth, maintain her body temperature and gain weight. These are milestones that mom, grandma and aunt are very excited to watch her achieve. She is anticipated to need many weeks in the NICU before we can enjoy her at home with us.
My goal for this fund is simply to alleviate some of the financial burden that comes with a premature birth and unexpected hospitalization. The money raised will be used for baby Mariana's medical expenses incurred during her NICU stay, lost wages from Mom, myself and Grandma. Living in the United States all by ourselves, my mother has raised us by herself through out her whole life and now she is showing my sister being a single mother, causes a lot of battles to be fought, and those little things that add up- is not only an emotionally taxing time for the family but unfortunately a very costly one as well.
Natalia is not only my sister, but she's also my best friend and if you know anything about our family, then you’ve seen first hand what selfless and compassionate my sister is. Let’s show her some love and support in return! There is no gift too small and I appreciate you taking the time to visit here.

El 14 de septiembre de 2019, mi hermana dio la bienvenida a su dulce niña Mariana Guadalupe Castillo, a tan solo 34 semanas. Antes de eso, Natalia fue al hospital y fue ingresada debido al aumento de la cantidad de líquido amniótico. Mariana fue diagnosticada con fístula traqueoesofágica también conocida como TE Fístula. Lo que significa que su esófago no estaba conectado a su estómago lo que le impedía tragar. Esto aumentó el líquido dentro del vientre de mi hermana mientras cargaba a la bebé. Los médicos determinaron entonces que darla a luz temprano era la mejor manera de mantener a salvo tanto a la madre como al bebé. A las 34 semanas (6 semanas antes) la pequeña Mariana hizo su debut pesando 4 libras 4 oz y 15" de largo.
Los latidos del corazón de Mariana permanecieron fuertes durante todo el embarazo, pero una vez que nacio su ritmo cardíaco era demasiado bajo. A las 4:09 a.m. cuando llegó por primera vez a este mundo, su corazón se detuvo. Todas las enfermeras y médicos estaban luchando con ella para tratar de obtener el ritmo más pequeño y fuerte. Después de 20 minutos de escuchar a las enfermeras y médicos tratando de estabilizar a mi sobrina, finalmente decidieron llevarla a la NICU y tratar de estabilizarla allí. Los 45 minutos más largos de nuestras vidas.
Después de lo que se sentía para siempre, y largas oraciones.. preparándome a mí misma, a mi hermana y a mi mamá para lo peor, el Doctor entra y dice que está estable. La cirugía que originalmente estaba necesitando, ya no será necesaria, sin embargo, hay un montón de más problemas que vienen.
Mariana permanecerá en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Neonatales (NICU) hasta que pueda respirar sin apoyo respiratorio, alimentarse por vía oral, mantener su temperatura corporal y aumentar de peso. Estas son las metas que mamá, abuela y tía están muy emocionadas de verla lograr. Se espera que necesite muchas semanas en la NICU antes de que podamos disfrutarla en casa con nosotras.
Mi objetivo para este fondo es simplemente aliviar parte de la carga financiera que conlleva un parto prematuro y una hospitalización inesperada. El dinero recaudado se utilizará para los gastos médicos de la bebé incurridos durante su estancia en la NICU, los salarios perdidos de mamá, yo y la abuela. Viviendo en los Estados Unidos solas, mi madre nos ha criado por sí misma a lo largo de toda su vida y ahora está mostrandole a mi hermana siendo madre soltera se acercan muchas batallas, y esas pequeñas cosas que suman- no es solo emocionalmente gravosa para la familia, pero por desgracia uno muy costoso.
Natalia no sólo es mi hermana, sino que también es mi mejor amiga y si saben algo sobre nuestra familia, entonces has visto de primera mano lo fuerta y compasiva que es mi hermana. Vamos a mostrarle un poco de amor y apoyo a cambio! No hay ningún regalo demasiado pequeño y le agradezco que se tome el tiempo para visitar aquí.
