Biannual Fundraiser Returns as Two-week Event to Benefit Local Theaters
Reno NV: Marianarchy is making a comeback. Featuring over 40 local music acts and performers, the annual fundraiser swings back into action at The Bluebird on Friday and Saturday, October 8th and 9th; then again at The Cellar Stage at Alturas Bar on Friday, October 15th; and finally closing at 40-Mile Saloon on Saturday, October 16th. Normally a one-weekend event, twice per year, this two-weekend event is the only Marianarchy scheduled for 2021. The event’s proceeds will go to benefit G3, an COVID-related initiative representing three Reno community theaters: Reno Little Theater (RLT), Brüka Theater and Good Luck Macbeth Theater Company (GLM).
The local, biannual, live-music-festival and fundraiser was last held in October of 2019, at the now-defunct Jub Jub’s Thirst Parlor. Many venues and stages in Reno were not able to survive the financial travails of 2020-2021. As such, Marianarchy has partnered with three venues that were able to make it through, in order to support stages that were completely shut down for the better part of a year and a half. The Bluebird, Alturas’s Cellar Stage, and 40-mile will all host the festival over two weekends, concurrently with a multi-week crowdfunding effort and virtual silent auction, to support RLT, Brüka and GLM in a vociferous show of performing arts solidarity.
Marianarchy has been a biannual fundraiser since 2004, in honor of namesake Marianne Psota. Her husband, Nick Ramirez, has continued to raise funds to help those in the service and arts industries affected by unexpected medical and health needs. In 2021, Marianarchy XVII’s efforts will go to benefit the theatrical venues that have often hosted or employed many of our service industry friends, as well as serving as catalytic meeting places for the Reno arts communities for many decades.
In March of 2020, Reno Little Theater, Brüka, and Good Luck Macbeth joined forces as G3 to create virtual content in the face of pandemic-related theater closures. From weekly programming to special production events to a 24-hr play festival, they continued to bring joy and art into the community for a year and a half. These events can all be found at the ‘Ghost Light TV’ channel on YouTube. Since closing on March 13, 2020, cancellations, postponements, and the consideration of other options for their patrons, artists, and current seasons has resulted in a combined loss of income of over $1 Million for the G3, along with the loss of seasons, events, and educational activities. Now, as the theaters begin to reopen, they continue to face challenges like truncated seasons, changing community safety protocols and reduced ticket sales.
