Marine House Renovation
PO Box 583
Mandan, ND 58554
Please GIVE TODAY and support the renovation of our Marine House – allow us to serve our fellow Marines and community through this building!
Last fall, local Mandan businessman, Fred Berger, gifted our Detachment the former Mandan VFW Post, located two miles west of Mandan on Highway 10, with the instructions for us to ‘make it come to life’. The structure was originally constructed in 1915 and served as the Price Consolidated School from through 1943. It sat vacant, near Price, ND, until 1959 when it was purchased by the Mandan VFW Post #707 where it was moved to its current location and served as their post facility through the late 1980s at which time it fell in to neglect and disrepair. Fred acquired the building recently; and, subsequently gifted it to our Detachment. Since Mr. Berger’s gift this past year, our committed membership, consisting of several generations of Marines, has hauled out more that 24-ton of lathe, plaster, garbage and debris and invested nearly 3,000 volunteer Marine-hours gutting and rebuilding this iconic, historic structure.
The inside of the building was stripped down to the stud walls while other areas were taken down to the foundation. With input from the county building inspector, generous community support and the talent of our membership, the building is being reborn and is currently waiting interior finishing - electrical and plumbing rough-ins, insulation, cabinets, flooring, doors, trim, appliances and more.
The intended purpose of this 'Marine House', as we call it, is to serve as a meeting place and club house for our Detachment but to also serve as a facility in which we can connect with area veterans in need. In the time of this reconstruction, we have assisted with three Marines who have contemplated the issues of suicide; and, two families - one of whom became a victim of suicide while the other family dealt with the loss of their son/brother while seeking assistance to transport his remains to his home of record (Oregon). Additionally, we also wish to be able to host events for the community in which we now serve, a few times each year. The events we host all support area Marines and veterans in need; whether the 1940s USO Night, Cycling For The Corps, BBQ With USMC Recruiters, Toys For Tots, or even our Marine Corps Ball.
The Dakota Leathernecks Detachment of the Marine Corps League is a tax-deductible, not-for-profit 501(C)4 organization. We have established a recognition platform for those businesses, organizations and individuals that have supported this project and wish to include your business on that roster. I hope it helps you understand the commitment we have to a completed, serviceable facility that can continue to support its veterans and the community once again!
The Marine Corps League is the only Marine Corps specific veterans’ service organization, chartered by Congress in 1937. The Dakota Leathernecks is the name of the local (Bismarck/Mandan) Detachment; currently the only Detachment in North Dakota and expanding in to Minot, Dickinson and Fargo.
